My grandmother, Mary Jane Daniels Jones, was born August 15, 1853 in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She was the eldest child of Thomas Daniels and Mary Davis.  Thomas Daniels and his wife, Mary Davis, had seven children.  The other six children were: Thomas Daniels, Daniel M. Daniels, David Daniels, Sarah Ann Daniels Jones, John Daniels and Joseph Daniels.  My grandmother, Mary Jane was the only child born in Salt Lake City.  Joseph was born in Malad and the others were born in Brigham City, Utah. 

Her family moved to Malad in 1865.  They were pioneers in Malad Valley.  Her grandfather (my great-grandfather) was the first bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, in this community. 

My grandmother married my grandfather (William Hugh Jones) in 1871.  They were the parents of eight children-my father Hugh William, being the eldest, Eli Benjamin, Thomas D., Mary Jones Kerns, Rachel Jones Ray, Oscar Dubois, Stella Jones Thometz and Ralph Harding Jones. 

Grandmother was a real homemaker.  A kinder, more loving, hospitable mother would be hard to find.  Their home was always a place of much activity, friends, neighbors and relatives like to congregate there, whether for work or enjoyment.  My grandfather Jones’ parents died when he was seventeen years of age and he was ten years older than the next child, so when grandfather got married his home was the home of his two brothers and one sister until they married and made homes of their own. 

Grandfather Jones was a tall man being better than 6 ft 2 inches.  At the time of his death he was 88 years of age and he was as straight as a young soldier.  He was an imposing figure with his auburn, later white wavy hair.  Grandmother was a short, slender lady with black hair, beautiful dark brown eyes and a winning smile. 

Grandmother had been a member of the Kensington Club since its inception and had been active throughout her life.  She did beautiful embroidery work and needle work of all kinds.
