MALAD-Levi Waldron Hughes, 78, of Samaria, died Sunday at his home of apparent heart failure. He was born December 28, 1907, in Samaria, a son of David James and Mary Ann Waldron Hughes. He grew up and attended school in Samaria, where he had lived most of his life. He married Orilla Barry, December 20, 1933. During his life he had farmed and ranched in the Samaria area. He enjoyed working with machinery and inventing new ideas to use on the ranch. He built the 1st Push Rake in the valley, which was used in the harvesting of hay.
Mr. Hughes was a member of the LDS Church, served on the Samaria Cemetery Board for 10 years, and had served on the Oneida County School Board for several years.
He is survived by his wife of Samaria, three daughters; Mrs. Edwena Arends, Salt Lake City, Utah; Mrs. Melvin (Dorothy) Speaker, Sandpoint, Idaho; and Mrs. Thomas C. (Marcenc) Williams, Samaria. One brother, Ralph Hughes, Samaria. Two half brothers, Edward Richards, S.L. City, Utah; and Henry Richards, Centerville, Utah. Four sisters, Leda Hughes Jones, Blackfoot, Idaho; Mary Hughes Towe, Idaho Falls, Idaho; Mrs. Harold (Elizabeth) Ballard, Salt Lake City, Utah; and Delora Morse Field, California. Two half-sisters; Violet Medly, Boise, Idaho; and Jean Willoughby, California.
He was preceded in death by one brother and two sisters.
Funeral services will be held Friday, February 7, at 12 noon in the Cherry Creek LDS Ward Chapel, with Bishop Owen Ward, officiating. Friends may call at the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home at 132 W. 300 N., Malad, Thursday evening from 7-9 p.m. and Friday at the Church from 11:00 until time of service. Burial will be in the Firth Cemetery
