Joseph Reed Nielsen, 69, of Logan, Utah, died Friday, November 1, $985 at Logan Regional Hospital of a heart attack. He was born November 14, 1950 in Portage, Utah, a son of Joseph A. and Ruby Williams Nielsen. He married Isabelle Owens, March 18, 1936 in the Salt Lake Temple.
He resided in Portage for 65 years, before moving to Logan in 1981. He was a graduate of Bear River High School. He was a High Priest in the Logan 20th Ward and served in the past as Bishop’s Counselor in two Bishoprics as well as other church capacities, all while living in Portage.
He owned and operated his ranch in Portage until his retirement in 1981. He was a member of the American Quarterhorse Association and Intermountain Quarterhorse Association. He was a member of the Utah Cattlemen Association and Utah Wool Growers Association.
Mr. Nielsen served as a Box Elder County Commissioner for 4 years, he was a past director of the Farmers Grain Coop. He was currently serving as a volunteer at the Logan Regional Hospital and has served over 500 hours.
Survivors are his wife of Logan, two sons and one daughter: J. Allan Nielsen, Palm Springs, California; S. Ray Nielsen, Logan, Utah; Mrs. Gary (Jeane) Cannon, Ogden. Six grandchildren. Five sisters, Mrs. (NaVelle Rhodes) East Garland; Mrs. Ruby Stevenson, Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Lowell (Beth) Christensen, Ogden; Mrs. LaRue Glasmann, Ogden; Mrs. Donna VanderSteen, Brigham. One son, two brothers and one sister preceded him in death.
Funeral services were held Monday at 1 p.m. in the Portage LDS Ward Chapel. Bishop Larry L. Howell officiated. Interment was in the Portage Cemetery.
