John Adams” Big Jack” Evans

EVANS, JOHN ADAMS, May 11, 1893 – June 6, 1990

John Adams” Big Jack” Evans, 97, lifetime resident of Malad, died June 6, 1990 in a Tremonton, UT nursing home. He was born May 11, 1893 in Malad, a son of John and Margaret Ann Jones Evans. He grew up and was educated in Malad, and attended the Presbyterian Mission School. As a young boy he farmed with his father on homesteaded land just north of Malad.

He married Catherine Hill on November 1, 1916 in Salt Lake City. They were married 67 years before her death on December 25, 1982.

After their marriage the couple purchased a ranch near Deep Creek which he still owned at the time of his death. He also worked for Wight Implement Company and the U.S. Forest Service.

He was sheriff of Oneida County for many years and re-elected to 11 terms. He held the record for the longest continuously-elected sheriff in Idaho.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Malad Lions, Modern Woodmen and was past president and lifetime member of the Idaho State Police Officers Assn. he was listed in “Who’s Who in the State of Idaho”.

He is survived by two sons, John Earl Evans, Richland, WA, and Ray Evans, Garland, UT; three daughters, Mrs. Don (Catherin) Limb, Garland; Mrs. Gail (Margaret) Boam, Downey; and Mrs. Peter (Rayma) Zagarella, Silver Springs, MD; 19 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, three brothers, five sisters, three grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Funeral services will be Friday at noon.
