Jay Alwin Smith, (1937)

SMITH, JAY A. – January 7, 1937 – February 23, 2003

Ogden – Jay Alwin Smith, 66, loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and a friend to all who knew him, died Sunday, February 23, 2003 at his home after a valiant fight with cancer.

He was born January 7, 1937 in Filmore, Utah, the only son of Alwin and Ada Pearl Davies Smith. He had five sisters.

Jay married Thora Sue Owens on June 5, 1976 in Elko, Nevada.

He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

During his 20 year career with the U.S. Air Force, Jay lived in various places throughout the United States. He had lived in Ogden for the past 26 years. Following his retirement from the Air Force, he worked at Hill Air Force Base as an aircraft mechanic retiring in 2002.

Jay loved the outdoors, archery and hunting.

Surviving are his wife, Sue, of Ogden, two sons and one daughter, Glen Richard (Terri) Smith, Fair Oaks, CA; Mark Kenneth (Kimberly) Sorensen, Las Vegas, NV; Shana Kay (Mike) Glines, Taylorsville, UT; 10 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Also surviving are four sisters, Pearl (Bill) Hammack, Layton, Judy (Neil) Harris, Layton; Karen (Charles) Rose, Layton; and Lueila (Ben) Ferguson, Ogden.

Jay was preceded in death by one son, John Smith, daughter, Kimberly Ann Williams and a sister, Afton Richardson.

Funeral services will be held at the graveside on Thursday at 11:00 a.m. at the Malad, Idaho City Cemetery, where Military Honors will be accorded.

Friends may call at Lindquist’s Ogden Mortuary, 3408 Washington Blvd., on Wednesday from 6-8 p.m.
