Jacob Kern, 83 died Saturday in Logan

A former Malad businessman, Jacob Kern, age 83, died Saturday at his home in Logan of a heart attack.

Funeral services were conducted at Logan Wednesday.

Mr. Kern operated Bannock Street Grocery here until 17 years ago when he retired and moved to Logan. He homesteaded in the Daniels area and farmed there for 16 years before opening the grocery store and locker plant.

Born Dec. 2, 1890, at Zurich, Switzerland, a son of Jacob and Karolina Gerber Kern, he came to the United States in 1899 with his family. He served an LDS mission to Northern States in 1909-11. On June 25, 1913, he married Lile Burbank in the Logan LDS Temple.

Mr. Kern was a High Councilman in Malad LDS Stake for 12 years, and was a Temple worker at Logan. He was also a past president of Malad Lions Club.

Surviving are his wife; sons, daughters: Charles J., Bountiful; Earl B., Rigby, Idaho; Mrs. Fay McDougal, Salt Lake City; Mrs. Franklin M. (Elease) Purrington, Ogden; Mrs. John (Jennie) Beutler, Clearfield; 26 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister Mrs. Lena Gill, Payson; stepbrothers, stepsisters: Lawrence and Arthur Neuenswander, Mrs. Lucy Hammon, all of Logan; Mrs. Bertha Frederson, San Francisco; Mrs. Sady Avery, San Fernando, Calif.
