WILLIAMS, HOWELL MIFLIN, JR., May 17, 1915 – May 20, 2004

Howell Mifflin Williams, Jr., age 89, beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and uncle, passed away peacefully in his sleep of pneumonia on May 20, 2004 in Bountiful, Utah.

He was born to Anna Eveline Hansen and Howell M. Williams, Sr. in Logan, Utah, May 17, 1915 while his father was attending USAC. His younger years were spent in Coalville and Garland, Utah, where his father taught school. Later the family moved to Cherry Creek, ID, where his father managed the family ranch and practiced what he had been teaching.

Miff attended high school in Malad, ID where he was student body president and lettered in football and track. He attended BYU and then began his banking career in California with the Bank of America. He married his sweetheart, Grace Richards on Jun 18, 1937 in the Logan LDS Temple. They settled in Ogden, Utah where Miff worked for First Security Bank for 47 years. He rose to the position of cashier and vice president of First Security Bank of Utah. During his banking career he served as president of the Ogden Chapter of the American Institute of Banking. He attended the Mortgage Banking School at Stanford University and was a graduate of the Pacific Coast Banking School at the University of Washington.

He was active in civic affairs by serving as president of the Ogden Lions Club, president of the Ogden United Fund, president of the Ogden Knife and Fork Club, a committee chair of the Chamber of Commerce and member of the Ogden Golf and Country Club. He was a supporter of the Utah Symphony and Opera and many local charities.

As an active member of The LDS Church he served in two bishoprics and as a Bishop of the Ogden 23rd Ward. He was a member of the Mount Ogden and the Ogden East Stake High Councils. He and his wife, Grace served as temple ordinance workers in the Logan and Ogden LDS temples for many years.

His hobbies included golf, attending musical and athletic events and spending time with his family. He and his wife enjoyed traveling to many parts of the world. During his retirement years he developed a great interest in gardening and loved sharing his beautiful flowers with others.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Dr. Roger R. Williams, and brothers, William J. Williams. He is survived by his loving wife of Bountiful; son H. Mifflin (Susan C) Williams III of Bountiful; daughter-in-law, Linda G. Williams of Salt Lake City; sister Marguerite W. Clarke of Coquille, Oregon and brother Cordell L. Williams of Cherry Creek, Idaho; 12 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.

A celebration of his life will be held May 24, 2004 at the Ogden 41st Ward. Interment in the Malad City Cemetery.
