My Great Grandfather
I was born according to the account that I have in Haverfordwest in the country of Pembroke South Wales in the year 1815 on August 18. My mother Mary Phillips was born 1797 in Haverfordwest Pembroke Wales. My father Benjamin Adams was born about 1793 in the same place as my mother. My father left my mother before I was born so I was put out to nurse as soon as I was born and was rather despised and knocked about from one to another until I was three.
Then my grandfather and grandmother Phillips took me after which I was taken good care of until I came to care for myself.
I was 18 years of age when I went to service to a farmer and after a while I went off like a bird out of his nest to try my luck to the town factories. I went through many difficulties before I could get on properly through being strange and unacquainted with the people and customs of a strange county. Some time later I got to work in the Iron Ore work and I got along better, saved a little money and got some clothes and other necessities. I was 20 years old when I went to work in the Iron works and worked here for 10 years. In 1845, November 22, I married Sarah Beynon, who was born 10 February 182, at Begelly Pembroke Wales. To this union were born eight children, 5 boys and 3 girls. They are Benjamin, Nephi, Sarah Ann, Clemd Caelos, George A., John H., William T., and Matilda Adams. They were all born in South Wales but William Adams who was born in Mieral Ridge, Ohio and Matilda Adams who was born in Lehi Utah. Sarah Ann was born and died the same day 16, June 1853, I wasn’t very much inclined to any religious party, I wanted the working class to have their rights. In 1849 a great alarm took place when a malady called Cholera broke out among the (people) causing great uneasiness. This caused the people to turn more to religious ideas. My lot fell with the Methidote’s but the more I read the more contradiction it seemed to be. So in the state of meditation my mind was called upon some principles which I heard through a people called Latter Day Saints. So though these Latter Day Saints made me understand his great purpose. So the 8, October 1849, I was baptized a member to the church to Latter Day Saints also my wife was baptized.
