History of Taliesin Hughes and Elizabeth Roberts 

Excerpts from the family record of Robert D. Roberts of Logan Utah relating to Taliesin Hughes and Elizabeth Roberts, his wife.  It is suggested that these quotations be used verbatim as far as practical and tied into the record by the references given because it is the original source record.  This is the custom always.  

I shall direct your attention to excerpts from that record already made and appearing in the printed book you now have so as to not repeat them. You can read it there.  I shall refer to it as “The Book”  giving the page.

  1. At Farmington reciting the employment of the family “Ann and Elizabeth were working out away from home”.  Jane was at home.  
  1. At the time of the siege of sickness of the family at Farmington in Nov. 1858 which terminated in Grandfather’s death the record says.  “But it ( the disease) did not touch Elizabeth , she was the only one of the family to escape it. 

Logan City Feb. 4, 1867 

  1.  January 13, 1867 in mothers house, Elizabeth, our second sister was married by Thomas Turbet, our Bishop, to a young man by the name of Taliesin Hughes. Taliesin Hughes and Elizabeth, our sister, live in a house of their own in this town (Logan) and everything appears well with them ( R. Rec. P. 10 & 11)

Logan City Nov. 5, 1869 

  1. Elizabeth gave birth to a set of twins, a boy and a girl, but they only lived a short time.  Their names were James and Catherine.  Elizabeth was rather unlucky in making her brother-in-law’s bed which was on a high place.  This caused the untimely birth of the twins (premature).  She has gained her health excellently. They live in Samaria, Malad Valley Oneida County Idaho.  They are making arrangements to go to Salt Lake City on Nov. 22, 1869 to receive their endowments in the House of the Lord (R. Rec. P. 11) 

Feb. 8, 1871 

  1. Elizabeth, our sister, wife of Taliesin Hughes gave birth, in Samaria, Oneida County, Idaho to a pair of twins, two little girls.  Their names are Ann and Margaret.  Ann was born at 9:40 in the evening and Margaret at 10:30 in the evening.  Ann weighed 5 ¾ lbs. and Margaret weighed 5 ¼ lbs. Margaret was very weak and looked very much like she would not live but a short time but she is gaining strength.  They were both blessed by Thomas T. Thomas on Feb. 9, 1871. 

Feb. 26, 1872 

  1. “Alexander Lewis came from Samaria, Oneida Co. Idaho and brought us the bad news of the death of Margaret, one of the twins.  On the 28th I received a letter bearing the same trouble.  The little one had a bad cold and looked like she was getting better but she had a fit and departed this life Feb. 22, 1872.  The other twin is sick of the same complaint.  We do not know how she is at present. (R. Rec P. 13)

March 6, 1874 Elizabeth, the sister wife of Taliesin Hughes gave birth to a pair of twins David Taliesin Hughes was born at 8:50 and Hyrum Hughes was born at 9:05 in the morning.  They were blessed by David Davies and their father on March 6th.  Mother brought this word from Samaria March 24, 1874.  (R.   1. “January 23, 1877 at 11:25 in the morning, Elizabeth Hughes gave birth to a little girl in Samaria, Idaho.  She weighed 8 ½ lbs. She was blessed ___ 18, 1877 by Owen Thomas.  Her name is Maria Hughes (R. Rec. P. 17)

18. Taliesin Hughes died from Diphtheria after a short sickness of  three days.  He took sick in school on Friday and on Monday he died.    Hyrum Hughes took sick of the same disease on the 21st of the same month.  He died about 2:00 in the morning of the 25th.  They were twins born March 6, 1874.  They were nice little boys and looked like they would grow up to be strong men.  They were buried at Samaria, Oneida Co. Idaho where their father lives at present. (R Rec. P. 20) 

19.  Logan City, Nov. 10, 1893–Ann Hughes, daughter of Elizabeth Roberts Hughes, our sister, and Taliesin Hughes, was married to John William Cowley on the evening of Aug. 23, 1893 in his Grandmother Davidson’s house in the First Ward Logan City by Edward Smith Justice of the Peace.  

 John Willam Cowley is a son of John Abner Cowley and Jennett Davidson Cowley.   He was born in Logan City Utah, Ann Hughes was born in Samaria, Oneida Co. Idaho.  John Abner Cowley is a son of Charles Cowley and Ann Killilp Cowley.  They embraced the Gospel in the Isle of Man in 1840 and emigrated to Nauvoo , Illinois the same year.  They came to Utah in 1850 and remained in Salt lake City until the year 1860 when they moved to Logan City Utah.  He was a very good old gentleman.   

Jennett Davidson Cowley is a daughter of Thomas Davidson and Ann Davidson .  They embraced the Gospel in Fifeshire Scotland in Feb. 1852 and they emigrated to Salt Lake City Utah the same year.  In the year 1860 they moved to Logan, Cache Co. Utah.  He had obeyed the celestial law of marriage (R. Rec. P 46)

21. Maria Hughes, daughter of Taliesin and Elizabeth Roberts Hughes, was married Dec. 16, 1896 to Thomas Williams, son of Messach and Elizabeth Lewis Williams, natives of South Wales.  Thomas and Marie Hughes Williams’ children are Elmer, Elizabeth, Charles, Thomas and Blanche. (Rec. p. 92)
