History of Sarah Bell (Zundel) Clark

I, Sarah Bell (Zundel) Clark, the oldest daughter of Issac David Zundel and Julia Bell Hall, was born 18 June 1893 at West Woodruff, Oneida, Idaho.  My first cries were heard in a one room log cabin, on my father’s homestead.  My parents had thirteen children, and I, being the oldest girl, was kept very busy.

When I was six months old, my parents moved to a three room house, owned by my grandparents.  They had bought a farm in Phoenix, Arizona. This house was one half mile east of the log cabin.

When I was four years old, my father was called on a mission, leaving my  mother with four small children.  He was gone for two years.  All this time, we lived  on the farm while father was gone.  Our nearest neighbor was almost a mile away.   In those days we didn’t have telephones, electric lights, radios, televisions or cars.  The only way we had to go anywhere was horseback or when mother would hitch up the horse to the cart.

The nearest store was in Portage, Utah.  It was owned by President Oliver Hoskins.  We would take our butter and eggs and exchange them for things we needed, such as toilet soap, sugar, syrup and a few small articles that we needed.  We used to enjoy visiting with my grandmother Hall when we went into Portage.

We were blessed with health and wonderful crops while father was gone on his mission for two years.  It was in 1900 that he returned.  It was that winter I had typhoid fever and was very sick.  It was only through their faith and prayers that I am here today.

I was baptized 18 June 1901 in Brother Davis’ springs (now owned by Glan Price).  I was baptized by my father and confirmed that same day by Bishop J.R. Harris as I sat on the rock by the springs.  My father was put in as Bishop of the Woodruff Ward in 1904.  He held this position until he moved to Malad in 1914.

I was married to Hugh Clark on November 20, 1912 in the Salt Lake Temple.  I am now 68 years old.  We have twelve children, nine of them who are still living.  We also have 38 grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.  We are both enjoying good health and we know that we have truly been blessed.  Our prayers have been answered many times.  I have worked in the Primary for many years.  I have been a Relief Society block teacher for many years also.  I still hold this position and Hugh is a Ward teacher.
