Gordon Arnold South, 78, of Malad, Idaho passed away peacefully in his sleep on Sunday August, 16th, 2015. He was born August 6th, 1937 in Malad, Idaho the third of four children born to Enoch Russell and Myrtle Ellen Anderson South. He was raised in Malad where he attended school and participated in scouting and church activities. He served in the Marine Corps after which he came back to Malad. He married Shirlee Ann Christofferson September 1, 1957, in Elko, Nevada. They had three children, Lydia Anne, Russell Clair and Kory Gordon. Together Gordon and Shirlee began their dream of owning their own businesses, first with a floral shop in Soda Springs and then taking over the floral shop his parents owned in Malad. They added a greenhouse to it and decided to expand their business horizons. They built and managed the South Gate Motel and when offered the opportunity to purchase the land just off the I-15 exit they jumped in with both feet building a motel and a convenience store, the Kwik Stop, where they sold a $1,000,000.00 winning lottery ticket in November 1990. The 1970’s and early 1980’s were busy for Gordon and Shirlee, they sold homes for Boise Cascade and Interstate Homes and were given an award for outstanding sales achievement; they had sold over $1,000,000.00 in homes. During those years they also built four apartment complexes, three in Malad and one in Downey, a post office in Arimo, an office to run the apartment complexes out of that now houses the Idaho Enterprise and the building that was leased by the Forest Service and now houses The Pines restaurant and a Real Estate office. Gordon and his business ventures set the pace for the growth and development of Malad. Gordon and Shirlee were awarded the Business of the Year 1991 by the Malad Chamber of Commerce. On a vacation trip to Jamaica, Gordon purchased a piece of land with a small vacation home on it. Eventually construction began on a vacation resort with Gordon working as the General Contractor and Shirlee as the decorator and designer. Sunset Resort and Villas was completed and the 74th Air Control Squadron of the US Air Force moved in. They stayed from September 1993 to September 1994 and at the end of their stay Gordon and Shirlee were given an award for outstanding service to the US Air Force. The resort has hosted many guests since then but none as exciting as Colin Powell and Barbara Walters. Gordon owned his own plane and he loved to fly. He was a dedicated member of the Malad Fire Department for seventeen years and he served as Vice Chief and Chief. He was a member of the American Legion since 1956 and held numerous positions in the Eagles Lodge. He was an organizer and president of the Junior Chamber of Commerce and served for a time as Vice President of the Malad Chamber of Commerce. He is survived by one daughter, Lydia Clark, and two sons, Russell South and Kory South. He is also survived by two brothers, Duane South and Kerry South and a sister Betty South, five grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife Shirlee South. He was greatly loved and will be deeply missed by his family. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, August 25 at 12 noon in the Malad LDS 2nd Ward Chapel. Friends may visit with the family at the Horsley Funeral Home on Monday evening from 6-7 p.m. and Tuesday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. at the funeral home.
