Former Malad City Mayor Glen B. Williams
Glen Blaisdell Williams, a former mayor, businessman and life-long resident of Malad, Idaho, died Friday, January 30, 1998, at his home.
He was born on February 15, 1918, at Malad, Idaho, a son of Edward Gleed Williams and Martha Blaisdell Williams. He was raised in Daniels, Idaho, and Malad and attended school there.
The family farm and logging business kept him and his brothers busy in the summer months as he was growing up, but also many happy and fun times were enjoyed during that period.
After graduating from Malad High School in 1936, he attended the University of Idaho at Moscow and graduated in 1940 with a B.S. degree in agriculture. Following graduation from the University of Idaho, he was inducted into the armed services in June 1941 as a private and was discharged in 1946 with the rank of captain.
He served two-and-a-half years of that time in the South Pacific during World War II.
While in the service, he married Helen Thomas at Boise, Idaho, where he was stationed at the time, and she accompanied him on his travels until he went overseas.
A son, Vard, was born to them while he was in Dutch, New Guinea.
After his release from the military service, he purchased and operated Sinclair wholesale and retail businesses and later opened a snowmobile sales and repair shop. He made many good friends from Southeastern Idaho and also from Northern Utah while operating these businesses.
He served on the Malad City Council for three years and as mayor of Malad for nine years. During this time Glen also served in many other state and local public service positions. He was an active member of the American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post 65 of Malad, Idaho.
He enjoyed fishing, golfing, hunting and snowmobiling and also followed all of the athletic events of the Malad schools. Glen was a member and elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by his wife, Helen; three sons, Glen Vard (Linda) Williams of Boise, ID; Lon Thomas (Kay) Williams of Salt Lake City, UT; Edward G. Williams of Malad, ID; and one daughter, Kathryn (Jerry) Sorensen of Boise, ID; ten grand-children and one great-grandchild three brothers Dee (Pearl) Williams of Malad, ID; Thayne (Nelda) Williams of Arbon, ID; and Leon (June) Williams of Darlington, ID; two sisters, Faye (Earl) Caldwell and June (Joe) Jones, both of Malad, ID; two sisters-in-law, Lou Williams of Malad, ID and Kenna Williams of Ogden, UT. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Claude Williams and Percy Williams.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 3, 1998. Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion, Ernest W. Jones Post 65.
