DOWNEY – George Fonso “Fon” Dewey, 87, lifelong resident of Downey, died Friday morning (16 Mar 1984) in the Marsh Valley Hospital after a long illness.

He was born February 22, 1897 in Downey to William Alfred and Eunice Jane Shurtliff Dewey. He grew up and attended school in Downey and also attended Brigham Young College at Logan, Utah. As a young man he had worked with his father on the farm.

He married Lottie Marshall November 1, 1916, in the Logan LDS Temple. After their marriage he purchased the family farm and some additional ground. He also worked for the Downey Cheese Factory as milk hauler and for many years did barbering in his home.

He was an active member of the LDS Church, where he had served on the stake Sunday school board, adult senior Aaronic Priesthood chairman, a Sunday school superintendent, counselor in the elder’s quorum, a counselor in the Cambridge Ward bishopric and a branch president while on a mission in West Palm Beach, Florida. At the time of his death, he was a high priest in the Downey First Ward.

He is survived by his wife, Downey; two daughters, Mrs. Wendell (Lottie Ona) Whitaker and Mrs. Reed (Venna) Criddle, both of Downey; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren, two brothers, Don Lavell Dewey, Rialto, California, and Leonard Valess Dewey, Paramount, California; a half-brother, Wendell Dewey, Murray, Utah; and two half-sisters, Thora Cock, Thousand Oaks, California, and Gladys Lake, Layton, Utah. He was preceded in death by four brothers, two half-brothers, a step-brother and two sisters.

Funeral services were held Monday at noon in the Downey LDS First Ward Chapel, Bishop Willis Barfuss officiating. Burial was in the Downey City Cemetery.
