Florence (Carlsen) Sinclair, (1925)

SINCLAIR, FLORENCE, April 8, 1925 – August 2, 2004

Florence Sinclair, 79, of Layton, Utah passed away from medical complications on August 2, 2004. Florence was born in Malad, Idaho April 8, 1925 to Anna Esklund and Thurval Carlsen. She moved to Salt Lake City in 1929 with her family and attended South High School.

Florence married C.V. Hawkins and they had one son, Jimmy (Karin) of Layton. She married L.J. Harris and they had two sons, Lee J. (Maura) of Layton; and Michael G. (April) of Long Beach, CA. Florence married R.C. Sinclair. She traveled with her husbands to Mississippi, Idaho, Washington State, California, New Jersey, Hawaii, Japan and Ohio until settling in Layton.

Florence worked as a store manager, a model, an English teacher for Japanese students, and an elevator operator. She was a connoisseur of oriental cuisine.

During her travels, Florence’s interest in other religions developed. She studied the LDS faith, Methodist, Lutheran, Buddhist and the Hindu religions. She practiced many forms of Yoga and had a Guru before the Beatles made it fashionable. She joined the Vedanta church while living in CA, and studied until receiving the name “Chin-May-1”. While living in Layton, Florence was introduced to ACKANKAR, the church of light and sound of God. Her Eck friends, who will miss her always smiling face, dearly loved her.

She had a kind heart with a bubbly and free-spirited personality. She loved spending time with her family, friends and especially her grandchildren who she loved deeply. Florence loved all of God’s creatures, especially cats. All who knew and loved her will miss her.

Florence is survived by her three sons, grandchildren Liana (Rick) Hawkins Lombard of Layton, Audra Harris of Long Beach, Michael Harris of Layton, Jamie Harris of Layton, and Mishelle Maizler of Hooper. Her youngest brother Calvin Carlsen of Atlanta, GA and three great grandchildren.

Florence was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Earl Carlsen, Fred Carlsen; sister, Becky Carlsen Gardner and ex-husbands C.V. Hawkins and Lee J. Harris.

An Eck memorial service will be held to honor Florence on August 7 at Aaron’s Mortuary and Crematory, Ogden, UT.
