DOYLE KIM ROSE, SON OF FORMER MALADIANS, KILLED IN ACCIDENT

ROY – A 17-year-old Magna youth was killed at noon Friday [June 22, 1956] on a construction job a mile north of Nye’s corner when a pile of sand shifted, burying him four feet deep.

It was his first day on the job.

The victim was Doyle Kim Rose, who went to work only Friday morning for the Clyde Construction Co. of Springville.

Young Rose and a coworker, Ray Reed, of Bountiful, were replacing the wood shoring which keeps sand off the railroad tracks which cut through the overpass when the accident happened.

Mr. Reed said he heard a strange noise and leaped to safety. Glancing back over his shoulder, he caught sight of the victim just as he tripped and fell over a shovel. An avalanche of sand poured over him.

Mr. Reed and three other workers dug frantically to free the youth, but it was 20 minutes before they uncovered the body. Efforts to revive him with a resuscitator proved futile.

He is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Elgin K. Rose of Magna and formerly of Malad.

Funeral services were held Monday at Magna and interment was in the Hyrum, Utah cemetery.

Those from Malad attending the services were Mr. and Mrs. David G. Williams and family, Mrs. Myra Wilson, Mr. and Mrs. Vernon Roberts, Mr. and Mrs. Gean Rose, Mr. and Mrs. Verlo Rose.

Afton Davis, Larue Thomas, Lyle Mills, Glenna Illum, Hazel Jones, Ed. N. Crowther, Annie Evans, Mary Harrison, Mabel Harrison, Mr. and Mrs. Gordon Griffiths, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Griffiths, met the procession at the Hyrum cemetery.
