Donald F. Meyer

Malad…Donald F. Meyer returned to his Heavenly Father on September 5, 2012 after a long and fulfilling life.
He was born August 8, 1924, to Lenus M. Meyer and Florence B. Fuller in Meyer, Mitchell County, Iowa. At the age of 2 he moved to Rosholt, Wisconsin and lived with his grandparents until age 14, when he went to live with his Uncle Lawrence and Aunt Margaret Meyer. He enlisted in the Navy on December 7, 1942, at Great Lakes Naval Base, Illinois where he proudly served in the Navy until December 4, 1945. He was always very proud of his service to his country.
After his honorable discharge from the Navy he moved to California where he worked in construction on the Palm Springs California tramway. He later was able to join the Palm Springs Fire Department, a profession which he loved because he was able to assist and serve people. After ten years in Palm Springs he moved to Utah where he worked for Thiokol Chemical (ATK) at Brigham City, Utah. This is where he met the love of his life, Corin Williams; they were married December 8, 1961. He retired from Thiokol after 27 years. He also served as a volunteer fireman and EMT ambulance worker for the city of Tremonton, Utah. His Commitment to service also allowed Donald to be an EMT instructor, be involved with HAZMAT, and Emergency Management where he acquired the CAPSTONE ACHIEVEMENT AWARD in 1994.
Don was a volunteer on the Members First Credit Union, (previously know as the Thiokol Credit Union) credit committee for many years. During this time he made many wonderful friends and enjoyed time traveling to seminars with the Credit Union as well as the Fire Departments.
Don was a member of the Masonic Lodge # 5 in Corinne, Utah and also Masonic Lodge #51 in Malad, Idaho. He achieved the 32nd degree, and was honored to be Worshipful Master of the Corinne Lodge. He also received the Hiram Award in the Corinne Lodge. He proudly held other positions in both lodges.
On June 23, 2012, Don and his special granddaughter, Matti Jo were baptized as members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Malad, Idaho.
Don enjoyed fishing, camping, “junking” finding old treasures, deep-sea fishing, and family gatherings. He was a jack of all trades, working as a painter, electrician, and carpenter, working hard at two and three jobs at a time so his wife could stay at home and take care of the family.
Don is survived by his wife of 50 years, Corin; daughter Rita Maurine (David Tea); daughter, Julie Marie (Gary Lund); Daughter, Lacy Jo (Josh Tanner); and son, Randy Ross (Arlene); and son-in-law Keith Mathews; 19 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and brother, Robert M. (Mari); sister Pauline; and many nieces, nephews and friends whom he cherished.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Rhonda Kathleen Mathews; grandson, Lance Jude Lund; sisters, Irene Stanley and Virginia Sand, as well as a great-granddaughter.
Graveside services will be held at the Malad City Cemetery on Tuesday, September 11, at 12:00 noon. Family and friends are invited to meet at the Senior Citizens Center in Malad, at 1:00 p.m. to celebrate Don’s life. Arrangements are under the care and direction of Horsley Funeral Home. Special thanks goes out to his doctors and the staff of the Oneida County Nursing and Long Term Care for their loving and compassionate service.
