Dennis Lee Day
February 22, 1955 – January 24, 2025
Dennis Lee Day died Friday, January 24, 2025 in Pocatello following a short illness. He was born February 22, 1955, to Lynn and Lou Donna Day and lived his entire life in Downey.
He met Debbie Whitworth, the love of his life, on a blind, double date. They were married in Inkom on August 19, 1977 and were devoted parents to son Heath and daughter Heather.
Dennis worked for more than 35 years for Bannock Paving, later known as Idaho Materials & Construction. He started as a tire man and eventually drove various heavy trucks on large construction projects.
He valued time with friends in Downey or hunting camps in the surrounding mountains. If he was known for anything, it was the heat from his massive campfires fed with loads of wood and a fair amount of accelerant. He was quiet and stubborn to the last, but also witty and deeply kind-hearted.
In his younger days, he appreciated fast cars, a good round of golf or a turn at the snooker table. He later valued the comfort of home. Dennis spent his mornings at the dining room table with a pot of coffee to work his way through the daily newspaper puzzles, especially the crossword and Sudoku. In the evening you’d find him in his home-bar, filled with his large collection of steins and Olympia beer paraphernalia and a pool table to pass the time. Of course, there was also a television to keep a close watch on his Chicago Cubs or to catch an episode of Gunsmoke or a “dirty John Wayne movie.”
Dennis was preceded in death by his father and his wife of 41 years. He’s survived by children Heath of Boise and Heather of Downey and grand dog Tasha, as well as mother Lou Donna of Downey, sister Donna Simon of Ely, Nevada, and brothers Don (Karen) of Malad and Darren (Elaine) of Salt Lake City.
A graveside service will be held Thursday, January 30th at 12 noon with a viewing prior from 11:00-12:00 at the Downey LDS church. Interment to follow at the Downey Cemetery. Friends may share condolences and memories with the Day family by visitingwww.horsleyfuneralhome.com.
