Dan E. Jones Family History

Daniel E. Jones history written by his daughter Elizabeth Jones Thomas.

My father’s name is Daniel E. Jones. He was born November 22, 1857, in Llansawel Carmarthen, Wales. His mother was Eleanor Evans Jones, his father William Thomas Jones of Wales, England.

Daniel crossed the plains and came to America when he was a young boy. He came with his brothers. They were very close and each helped the other. They bought a mill in Malad, Idaho and ran this mill together for some time. Later they sold out to William Jones. John and Daniel, my father moved to Gwenford. Here they bought a flour mill, roller to roll grain and for many years ran the mill.

Daniel bought a ranch in Gwenford and had many cattle. Later he sold his share in the Gwenford mill and began to raise cattle. He had one of the best herds of Hereford cattle at the time.

Daniel married my Mother, Elizabeth Harriet Richards. To this union two children were born, my sister, Eleanor Margaret and myself Elizabeth Harriet.

When I was three weeks old my mother died, my father was alone with two children. His sister Mary took us and raised us as her own. My father went on in the cattle business, and farming, he became very wealthy. He built a large home on his ranch in Gwenford. The home still stands. Later in life he married again, Janette Price. Her daughter has the ranch and the home built by my father.

My father was very ambitious and worked very hard. On his death, my sister and I did not receive any of his possessions but while he was living he gave us all the opportunities to be had at that time. He has many posterity, to carry on his name. My sister has seven children, I have four. We have many good memories of our father, but our mother we were not privileged to know. My father’s sister Mary was a wonderful person to my father and us, and we knew her as mother. My father paid her, for her taking care of us as she was a widow with nine children to raise alone.

My father died at the age of 66 in Malad, Idaho, March 19, 1923.
