Cecil Casper Sweeten

July 13, 1934 – July 17, 2026

Cecil Casper Sweeten, 92, passed away Friday July 17, 2026, at the long-term Care Center in Malad, Idaho. He was born July 13, 1934, in Holbrook, Idaho. He was the ninth of eleven children born to Colen Hagle and Mary Casper Sweeten.

He attended schools in Holbrook, and Malad and graduated from Malad High School in 1952. He married Arlis Jensen on June 24, 1953, in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple. Two years later he was called to serve as a missionary, for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, in the New England States Mission. Arlis stayed home and worked for the Superintendent of Malad Public Schools while he was gone. He served in the United States Army Reserve on his return for one year.

He grew up splitting time between Holbrook and Malad Idaho. The Sweeten ranch was where hard work and family came first. Years of family gatherings and cattle drives brought in the large extended Sweeten cousins and friends from all over knitting love and memories.

He and Arlis worked for Morton Thiokol, Promontory, Utah, early in their marriage. After leaving the ranch he became a long-haul truck driver. Over the years he worked for several companies, also co-owning a large Trucking Fleet out of Houston, Texas. The many moves eventually brought him and Arlis back to Malad due to Arlis’s health. They were the parents of five children. Arlis died of pancreatic cancer in 2006.

He married Gloria Brown Nelson in 2007. She died in an automobile accident in 2010.

Cecil served as Onieda County Commissioner from 2007 to 2018. Cecil was a hard working man willing to help anyone who needed him and never met a stranger. His hard work went way beyond normal retirement age. He was forced into retirement at the age of eighty-eight, due to the trucking company no longer able to afford his insurance coverage.

He is survived by daughter Wendy (Darrell) Peck, Florida, and four sons, Ken (Richelle), Texas, and Todd (Ruth), Darin (Bethany), Lance (Tiffany), all of Utah; and his step-children, LaVae (Kip) Heiner, Utah, Cheryl (Bob) Nelson, Arizona, son Bart (Kristi) Nelson and Michelle (Ron) Glaittli, all of Utah. He is also survived by 17 grandchildren, 22 step-grandchildren, 11 greatgrandchildren, 71 step-great grandchildren, and 1 step-great, great grandchild.
