Malad…..Carol Dawn Willie, longtime Malad resident and wife of the late Carl Wiille, passed away on Sunday Agust 8, 2010 at her home. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010 at 12 noon in the Malad LDS 2nd Ward Chapel 20 S. 100 W. Friends mayu visit with the Willie family on Wednesday evening from 6-8 pm at the Horsley Funeral home 132 W. 300 N in malad, and on thursday at the funeral home from 10:30-11:30 am. MALAD – Dawn Hendricks Willie, 83, passed away peacefully in her sleep on Sunday, August 8, 2010, at her home.

She was born on March 26, 1927, in Richmond, Utah, the second daughter of Samuel Allen and Georgia Marteal Wight Hendricks. She spent her childhood in Malad where she developed her love for music, education, family, and the gospel. Carol Dawn graduated from Malad High School in 1945.

She then continued her education at Utah State University, then Utah State Agricultural College, where she earned degrees in business education and elementary education. She also earned her master’s of education degree from Utah State University.

She married the love of her life, Carl Ray Willie, on March 18, 1949, in the Logan LDS Temple. They spent 58 years together, working and raising their family all those years before Carl passed away November 12, 2007.
Carl and Carol Dawn spent the majority of their married lives in the Malad Valley. They spent most of their years farming. They also owned the Malad Department Store for many years.

Carol Dawn began teaching school in 1958. She taught fourth grade to many students during her 37 years as a teacher at Malad Elementary. Even after her retirement, she spent the next 14 years as a substitute teacher, only giving this up when her health no longer allowed her to do this.

Carol Dawn had a great love for music. She loved to share her talents with others, both through singing and playing the piano, violin, and organ. She taught piano for many years, teaching many of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Carol Dawn had a great love for the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many organizations in her life, including serving as the ward Relief Society president, the ward Young Women’s president, and the stake choir director and stake music director. She was also the ward choir director for many years. At the time of her death, she was the ward Primary pianist, a calling she had held for the past 11 years. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for many years, serving as the secretary at the time of her death.

Carol Dawn is survived by her children, Timothy Ray (Julie), Craig Randal (Lois), and Laurie (Jeff) Richins, all of Malad; her daughter-in-law, Karen Elliot Willie of Lyman, Wyoming; 18 grandchildren and 31 great-grandchildren with two more on the way.

She is also survived by her sisters, Betty Jane Crowther of Malad, and Kathryn Moon of North Ogden, Utah; and her brother, Samuel Allen Hendricks Jr. (Sharon) of Salt Lake City, Utah. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her son, Gregory Paul Willie.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, August 12, 2010, at noon in the Malad LDS Second Ward Chapel, 20 S. 100 W. Friends may visit with the Willie family on Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Horsley Funeral home, 132 W. 300 N. in Malad, and on Thursday at the funeral home from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery.
