Carl Willie

Carl Ray Willie, 82, husband of Carol Dawn Hendricks Willie, passed away Monday, November 12, from complications to diabetes.

Carl was born February 4, 1925, in Superior, Wyoming, the youngest of three sons of Robert and Letitia Willie. He was raised in Holbrook on the family farm and in St. John. His family eventually moved into Malad.

Carl attended Malad High School and was part of the Class of 1944. But World War II was raging at the time and Carl was drafted into the United States Army. He spent most of his time in the service in the Pacific Theater of the war, spending time on the Philippine Islands.

After his return from World War II, Carl fulfilled a mission to the Central States Mission, which included Kansas and Missouri.

When his mission was complete, Carl returned to Malad. He started attending Utah State Agricultural College, majoring in Agri-Business. He also began dating his sweetheart, Carol Dawn Hendricks. They were married March 18, 1949, in the Logan LDS Temple. They shared 58 years together.

Carl worked at many professions over the years. His greatest passion was farming and working on the land. He continued to drive the tractor, working alongside his son and grandsons, as long as he was able. He and his wife also co-owned Malad Department Store for many years. He retired in 1993 from La-Z-Boy, Utah, after working 10 years as a Receiving Supervisor.

Service was important to Carl. He was always willing to help who he could. He served for many years in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a Counselor in the Bishopric and a High Councilman as well as being very involved in scouting. He and his wife faithfully home taught many of the widows of the ward.

Carl is survived by his wife, Carol Dawn Willie; his son, Timothy Ray (Julie) Willie and Craig Randal (Lois) Willie, and his daughter, Laurie Willie (Jeff) Richins, all of Malad; his daughter-in-law, Karen Elliot Willie of Lyman, Wyoming, along with 18 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren, with three more on the way.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Letitia Willie; his brothers Robert and Gordon Willie, and his son, Gregory Paul Willie.

Funeral services will be held at the Malad Second Ward Building on Saturday, November 17, at 12:00 noon. A viewing will be held at the Horsley Funeral Home on Friday night from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m., and again just prior to the funeral from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

Burial will be in the Malad City Cemetery with military rites performed by the American Legion Ernest W. Jones Post #65.
