D.P. Jones Sr., was born in September 1864 at Logan, Utah. He is the son of Morgan T. Jones and Mary Parry Jones both of Wales. His father was a coal miner in the old country and when he settled here in the spring of 1868, he took up farming and stock raising.

Mr. Jones was only two and one-half years old when his parents moved to this valley. When Mr. Jones was 14 years old, he was driving oxen teams into Montana and to many points in Idaho, such Challis, Wood River and Custer. 

Mr. Jones attended school for a few years in Malad. Some of his school teachers were Richard Evans, D.L. Evans and R.T. Owens and Mr. Waylett. In Mr. Jones’ younger days, it was a difficult matter to secure an education, as the schools were in session only three or four months during the year when very little work on the farm could be done. The schools in those days were run by churches rather than at the public expense.  

Mr. Jones was very unfortunate in losing his mother when he was only 11 years old, for this was one of the reasons he never continued his schooling. 

Mr. Jones was married to Mary Thomas, June 2, 1868, by John “Saddler” Lewis, and they have lived in this valley and watched it progress since. Mrs. Jones was one of the first white children born in this valley. 

Mr. Jones has had varied experiences in farming and stock raising. He had a large section of land in lower Elkhorn which he divided up among his boys upon his retirement from farming. The east part of the Elkhorn dam was built on part of his land. He took part in the making of the first dirt dam to be built there.  

Mr. and Mrs. Jones are the parents of 11children, eight of whom are living and three have passed away. Those living are: Mae Jones of Santa Barbara, California; Mrs. Pearl Jones Reed of Sandy, Utah; D.P. Jones, county auditor; Henry T. Jones, Morgan T. Jones, Dewey T. Jones and Myron Jones, all of Malad. Those dead are: Sylvia, Gomer and Alberta.  

Mr. and Mrs. Jones celebrated their golden wedding anniversary last June and they are looking forward to many more happy anniversaries. 

Mr. Jones advises the younger generation to pick out a vocation and go into it with full determination to succeed and above all, to be thrifty and honest.
