Malad – Bertha Lois Hinkley Emery, 87 of Malad, died Sunday, May 29, 1994 in Malad.

She was born November 30, 1907, in Bowdoinham, Maine, a daughter of Charles Aaron and Ella Mae Small Hinkley. She attended schools in Maine, and graduated from Somerset Academy in Athens, Maine. She studied nursing, and worked at the Augusta State Hospital for several years.

During World War II she was on special duty to care for the wounded military personnel at the Togus VA Hospital. She married Leland M. Emery May 31 1930 in Augusta, Maine. Mr. Emery passed away in 1976.

She and her family moved to Windsor, Maine in 1938, where she lived until 1980, when she moved to Malad to reside with her daughter, Mrs. J.W. (Laura) Crowther. She was an active member of the Windsor Grange and the Eastern Star. She also was a member of the Windsor Baptist Church.

She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Laura and J.W. Crowther, of Malad, Shirley and George Rollins of Winthrop, Maine; seven grandchildren, Jim Crowther of Pocatello, Idaho, Mrs. Diane Roylance of Lindon, Utah, Randal E. Crowther of Hyde Park, Utah, Mrs. Carol Palmer of St. George, Utah, Linda and Laurie Rollins of Winthrop, Maine, and Mrs. Georgia Baillargeon of Monmouth, Maine; and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, a twin sister at birth, and one grandson, Leland Rollins, who passed away in 1990.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 2, 1994, at noon in the Benson-Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W. 300 N., Malad, with Bishop J.W. Crowther officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday, June 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. and on Thursday for one hour prior to the service. Further services and burial will be Monday, June 6, in Windsor, Maine.
