Our beloved mother and grandmother, Althea Rawlins Woodland, died peacefully on November 13, 2016 in South Jordan, Utah, surrounded by her family on both sides of the veil. She was 96.

Born July 3, 1920 in Lewiston, Utah to George and Nellie Rawlins, Althea was the youngest of five children. She trained as a nurse, serving in the Army Nurse Corp in North Wales and France during World War II. She married D. Platt Woodland in the Logan Temple in 1946, and they were blessed with six children. They moved to Downey, Idaho in 1956 where she worked as a nurse at the Marsh Valley Hospital until her retirement in 1986. A widow for 52 years after D. Platt’s death in 1964, she raised her family with faith, love, patience and determination.

Althea loved her family, her extended family, and her many friends and neighbors, always looking for ways to help and encourage them. Strengthened by her faith in Jesus Christ, she had an inner joy evidenced by an infectious smile. A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, she served in many ways including as a full-time missionary in Kentucky and as an ordinance worker in the Logan Temple. She loved to be on the go, traveling near and far as opportunities allowed, including a tour of Israel in her mid 80’s. Althea especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends. She did her best to attend the special events in their lives. She was a great example of kindness, dedication and perseverance. She looked for opportunities to learn, loved to read, and enjoyed her active membership in the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, the Downey Study Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Althea is survived by five of her six children: Ron (Jolene) of West Jordan, Utah; Susan Garbett (Shawn) of Idaho Falls, Idaho; Steven (Darlene) of Taylorsville, Utah; Phillip (Cherri) of Murray, Utah; and Elizabeth Nelson (Blair) of Boise, Idaho; 23 grandchildren and 57 great-grandchildren (with more coming). Preceded in death by her husband D. Platt; son Gordon; her parents; her sisters Lilly Hardman and Janette Donkin; and her brothers Charles Rawlins and Reginald Rawlins.

Althea’s family would like to express their appreciation to the staff of Carrington Court in South Jordan, those assisting in her LDS branch there, and her hospice nurses for the loving care they gave her during the last part of her life.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, November 19 at 11 a.m. in the Downey LDS Chapel. Friends may visit with the family from 9:30-10:45 a.m. prior to the service. Burial will follow in the Logan City Cemetery. Burial will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Logan City Cemetery.
