Agnes A. Hartley, 86 of American Falls, died Thursday, Feb. 2, 1984 in a Nampa hospital following an illness.
She was born April 7, 1897 in Windsor, Illinois to John W. and Agnes Amelia Hengst Burns. She moved with her family to Louisiana where she began her schooling. They moved later to Alamosa, Colorado and later to Idaho. .
The family farmed west of Rockland and Agnes worked and attended school in American Falls. After graduation from high school, she attended Albion State Normal School. She earned her teaching certificate and began a teaching career.
She married William Hartley in American Falls June 10, 1917.
She taught in many of the small schools throughout Power County, retiring after 48 years in the classroom.
For the last several months of her life, she had been in Nampa to be near her daughter, Eleanor.
She was an active member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church. She was also involved with numerous civic and professional organizations, including National Education Association and Idaho Education Association where she held lifetime memberships. She was a member and past president of BPW and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society. She served as president, secretary and tour director of the county chapter of AARP’s. She also worked for the Red Cross, handicapped children and NRTA.
She assisted with elections census enumerations and made Civil Defense surveys of Power County. She was a member of the Power County Senior Citizens. Her hobbies included travel and reading.
Survivors include two daughters, Wilmetta Meadows of American Falls and Eleanor Slusser of Nampa; one sister, Bessie Harris of Hollister, California; four grandchildren; and five great grand-children.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary was held Monday, Feb. 6 at 7 p.m. in St. Mary’s Catholic Church. Celebration of Mass was held Tuesday, Feb. 7 at 11 a.m. with Father Thomas Taylor as celebrant. Burial was in Fallsview Cemetery under the direction of Davis Mortuary.
