A Sketch of The Life of My Mother “Mary Adams” (Jones)
My Mother, Mary Adams was born May 27, 1877, at Malad Oneida County, Idaho. The daughter of Benmanim Nephi Adams and Mary Ann Clark. There were twelve children in the family, eleven girls and one boy. My mother being the fifth child. She was about five feet four inches tall, with black hair and weighed about 165-175 lbs. As I remembered her.
She attended what schooling she had at Malad, Idaho, but at that time the fifth grade was the highest they went and only about three months out of the year. So she had very little schooling. Her mother worked very hard and the girls all helped when at home.
At the age of 17, my mother married my father, John Asahel Jones, at Malad, Idaho, December 7, 1894. To this union were born eight children, 4 girls and 4 boys. One boy, LeRoy, died the same day as he was born.
My mother worked very hard helping my father on the farm where they milked several cows in the summer and my mother churned from 35 to 45 lbs. of butter every week and delivered it in Malad on Saturday morning to some cafes and private families. At that time butter sold for 25 cents to 35 cents a pound.
My mother was also a very good seamstress and sewed for all her children and some of her sisters’ children. Also made dresses for some of the Malad school teachers as at that time they didn’t buy dresses ready made.
They had a home in Malad and moved there in the winter so their children could attend Malad schools.
She was baptized a member of the church 9 February, 1895, at Malad, Idaho. She was also a member of the Relief Society.
She died 26 January 1934, at the age of 56, of a stroke at her home in Malad and she was buried at Malad, Idaho.
I did her endowment in the Logan Temple 27 February 1936 and had her sealed to her husband 26 February 1942.
