A Biography of Susan Arbon

(Great Grandmother)

Susan Arbon, daughter of James Arbon and Elizabeth Newman, was born May 30, 1831, at Graveley, Cambridgeshire, England. Her early childhood was spent in England, as also was her early womanhood. She was married to John Bradley Catmull, October 13, 1851 and the union was blessed with eight children.

In the early 1870s she had the privilege of hearing the “gospel” from some Mormon Elders, who were in the vicinity of her hometown. She was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, April 16, 1874. About 1877, she, with her husband and family, decided to come to Zion. Zion to them meant “pure in heart” and was the term used to describe the state of Utah in the United States of America. Utah at that time was only a territory. It was not granted statehood until later.

They left Graveley, Cambridgeshire, England, in June 1880, sailing on the U. S. S. Wisconsin. There were a number of saints on the same ship at this time, who were leaving England to come to Zion. No mishaps were encountered on the voyage and the family arrived safely in the United States.

Early in July of the same year (1880) the family arrived safely in Logan about July 3, 1880, where they established a residence in the “Second Ward District” of Logan, Cache County, Utah. Henry Ballard, father of Apostle Melvin J. Ballard was bishop of this ward.

The family lived in Logan for three years, then moved to Benson, a small settlement six miles northwest of Logan. The family were living here at the time of Grandmother’s death, which occurred on October 9, 1898. She is buried at Hyde Park, Cache County, Utah.

All her life, from the time of her baptism, Grandmother was an ideal saint, and a devoted church worker, having endured many trials and tribulations. Although sickly most of her life, she was admired by all who knew her.
