A Biography of John Bradley Catmull

John Bradley Catmull, son of William Catmull and Mary Ann Bradley, was born July 6, 1827 at Joseland, Hunts, England.  Very little is known of his boyhood and early manhood until he had the privilege of  hearing the “Gospel” from the Mormon Elders, who were in the vicinity of his home town at the time.  He was baptized a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on August 20, 1876, by Elder Pratt D. Lyman, and was confirmed a member of the Church about August 21, 1876 by Elder George Ferrell.

He is “heir” to the works of Salvation of the Catmull family, since he was the first male member to join the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.  He lived the true life of the early pioneer days.  This was for a worthy cause.

He was married to Susan Arbon, October 13, 1851.  Eight children were born to the union.  All of the children lived to maturity with most of them raising a large family.

While in England, Grandfather followed the trade of “drainage and tile expert.”

Soon after conversion to the gospel, about 1877, Grandfather and Grandmother, in company with their family, decided to come to Zion, which to them meant “pure in heart” and was the term used to describe the state of Utah, in the United States of America.

In June 1880 the family left Graveley, Cambridgeshire, England, sailing from Liverpool on the U.S.S. Wisconsin.  After a reasonable length of time, they arrived safely in the United States.  Transportation was booked from the Norwich Conference of the L.D.S. Church.

About July 3, 1880 the family arrived in Utah, where they established a residence in the 2nd Ward District of Logan, Cache County, Utah.  Henry Ballard, father of the late Apostle Melvin J. Ballard, was Bishop.

The family lived in Logan for a period of three years, and then moved to Benson, a small settlement six miles northwest of Logan, where John Bradley Cutmull followed the occupation  of farming.  (Willow Creek, referred to in other notes, ran across one corner of the farm.)  While here, Grandfather’s wife passed away in 1898.  He married Mary Ann Cook as a second wife.  Grandfather passed from this life December 28, 1906 at Benson, Cache County, Utah.  He was buried December 31, 1906 at Hyde Park, a neighboring town.
