Funeral Services For Hyrum Ashton

Funeral services were held at the Malad Third ward on Sunday afternoon for Hyrum Ashton, well known farmer of Oneida County who died at his home May 30, 1939, after a three months illness. Bishop LeGrande Horsley presided at the services at which the invocation was offered by Bishop John R. Gibbs of Portage and the benediction by Richard Ward of Pocatello.

Speakers were: Thomas D. Evans, I. D. Zundell and R. N. Hill, musical numbers were given by Mrs. Margaret E. Jones, Mrs. Blodwin Price, J. Guy Gleed and L. G. Corbridge and Stillman Harris. Interment was in the Portage cemetery with Benjamin Lundberg dedicating the grave. Six sons of Mr. Ashton acted as pall bearers.

Hyrum Ashton was born April 2, 1865 at Wellsville, Utah, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Ashton. He came to Malad valley in 1878 with his parents and engaged in farming in Woodruff. In 1884, he was married to Emma E. John and they became the parents of fourteen children. Mrs. Ashton died six years ago.

Mr. Ashton moved to Malad in 1924. He has made many friends here and has always been a member of the L. D. S. church.

Surviving are seven sons: Lee, Walter, John, Robert, Harey, Joe and Warren Ashton and four daughters, Mrs. Brig W. Jones, Mrs. Minnie Johns, Mrs. Kenneth Fredrickson and Mrs. John McCallister. One sister, Mrs. Marla London of Portage, Utah also survives.

Out of town relatives attending the services were: Mrs. Sarah Paul and son Tommy and Mrs. Thomas Rought and son Kenneth of Pingree, Idaho; Mr. and Mrs. Melvin Gibbs and daughter Roma of Idaho Falls; Mr. and Mrs. Joe Landon of Firth; Mr. and Mrs. Richard Ward and daughters, Thelda and Eunice of Pocatello; Mr. and Mrs. Orsen Landon, Dave Landon, Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Allen, Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Johnson and Mrs. Maria Landon of Portage, Utah; Mr. and Mrs. John Heaton of Brigham City; Darrell Heaton of Tremonton, Stuart Burnett and son of Plymouth and Mrs. Thomas John and Mr. and Mrs. John Rich of Logan.
