Betty & Earl Tubbs

Elizabeth Jeanne (Betty) Fredrich Tubbs passed away Sunday, February 23, 2014 at her home in Malad, Idaho.

She was born October 23, 1923 at Pocatello, Idaho to Rachel Fryer and Walter Fredrich. She grew up on the Fredrich Mountainview Ranch located in Bull Canyon west of Arbon Valley, Idaho.

She attended 1st grade in Pocatello, Idaho, living with her grandmother, Elizabeth Fryer. She was home schooled most of her early years, graduating from Malad High School in Malad, Idaho. She attended Idaho State University, earning a certificate in home economics. Her childhood years were spent helping her parents on the Ranch, playing with her younger sister Frances and training her horses to do tricks. The family always looked forward to to the Fourth of July Rodeos her dad would put on for the local community.

After she met Earl, he encouraged her to read The Book of Mormon, whereupon she requested baptism into The Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints. She and Earl were married in the Logan Utah Temple on December 14, 1944. Last year they celebrated 69 years of being constant companions. She was truly Dad’s right-hand-man and they depended on each other everyday.

Mother’s life was one of great faith and willingness to do whatever needed doing. She served faithfully in many church callings but is best remembered for her love of primary. She always taught the older boys and instilled in them a love for the outdoors and scouting.

She loved to read and instilled that habit in her children. She liked being outdoors, riding horses and maintaining her flower garden. She enjoyed genealogy and writing up her family histories.

She will be remembered for her love of family and kind gentleness to all.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Rachel and Walter; sisters Dorthy Fredrich and Frances Mitchell.

Earl Johnson Tubbs passed away on Sunday, February 23, 2014, a few hours before his lifetime sweetheart at his home in Malad, Idaho. He was born to Mary Katherine Johnson and William Albert Tubbs in Holbrook, Idaho on September 6, 1918 – just ahead of harvest time. He was the eighth child and second son in a family of eleven children.

At the age of six, he learned to drive his first team of horses to help in the spring plowing. He attended school in Holbrook, Idaho, but his great love was being busy outdoors – trapping, hunting, and helping on the family farm.

At an early age, he wanted to be earning his own way. He started buying calves which he fed and raised to resale. He always loved cattle and horses.

He was part of the first group of men drafted from Oneida County for World War II in 1941. After his honorable discharge, he met and married Elizabeth Jeanne (Betty) Fredrich. Together they farmed and raised cattle in Holbrook, Idaho, Walpello (near Blackfoot), Idaho, and near Samaria, Idaho. They eventually purchased the Fredrich Mountainview Ranch where Betty was raised. They spent their happiest years here raising the cattle Dad loved so much – with a few buffalo thrown in as an experiment. Dad’s goal was always to be a good steward in whatever he did.

In 1981, they were called to serve a welfare mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints to Nuku’alofa Tonga. They spent the time there tending cattle and fixing fence together. Mother and Dad enjoyed camping and fishing with their family members and took many trips together. Anyone coming to visit them was always welcomed and amply fed.

Earl is preceded in death by his parents, Mary and William; 5 sisters, Alta Tubbs, Letha Neal, Ireta Moon, Golda Misenhimer, and Ardella Byington. He Is survived by a sister, Hazel Hansen; and a brother, Junior Tubbs. Betty and Earl Tubbs are preceded in death by daughter-in-law, Treena Jacobsen Tubbs; and grandson, Rusty Earl Tubbs. They are survived by their children, Dale (Kathy), Jean (James) Smith, Paul (Karen), Don (Carlean) and Jon Tubbs all of Malad, Idaho; 28 grandchildren; 68 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services for Betty and Earl will be held at noon on Saturday, March 1, 2014 in the Second Ward Chapel located at 20 South 100 West Malad, Idaho. A viewing will be held at Horsley Funeral home, 132 West 300 North Malad, Idaho from 6-8 pm Friday February 28, 2014 and Saturday at 10:30-11:30 prior to services. Interment will follow the services in the Malad City Cemetery.
