Father was the son of Lewis J. Lewis and Eleanor Davis Lewis.   He was born July 23, 1857 at South Wales.  He came to America with his parents when he was five years old.  They came to America and settled at Ogden, Utah on the Weber River for the first winter.  His father then built a log cabin where Uncle Nephi’s house is now.  He then homesteaded on the ranch.  He had to work very hard as a boy helping his father.  He had one brother, Uncle Nephi, and four sisters.  Three of his sisters died within three weeks of each other. 

Mother and Dad were married August 20, 1873 at St. John in mother’s home.  Mother was twenty years old and Dad was seven years older than mother.  Dad’s folks lived down on the ranch.  Mother said they both rode the same horse down to his father’s.  She rode in the back.  The next spring, Dad homesteaded the ranch that we all lived on, where Boy Lewis now lives (now Mark Petersen’s).  They had twelve children, ten boys, two girls ( three died as infants). 

When he grew up he used to drive oxen from Brigham to Montana.  It would take from two to three months to make the trip.  I have heard him say many times in the fall and winter when he got up in the morning his boots would be frozen stiff.  They would have to thaw them out.  Many a load of grain he hauled to Corinne in the covered wagon and bring back sacks of  

sugar cane or molasses, coffee etc.  

He was one of the school trustees at St. John.  He was a county commissioner.  We then had the county seat at Preston.  He drove there in the little buggy with white horses.  He made many trips from St. John to the ranch each day.  He cut oats and other grains for nearly all of St. John and Elkhorn.  I took twine to him in the cart and helped him shock the grain.  He always attended church until some trouble came up and they cut him off and uncle Nephi, too.  Uncle Nephi joined again but Dad never.  We lived in a log house with four rooms and a dirt roof until we were nearly grown, then they built the house where Elmer was born.  Mother was then forty-nine years old.   

Father died on April 15, 1922.
