Sara Ann Richards Hughes, daughter of John Thomas Richards and Ann Janet Morgan, was born 29 Jan 1859 at Trabon, Glamorgan Wales. Married Daniel Hughes Jan 1877. Died 31 Oct 1937 at Malad, Oneida, Idaho and buried 3 Nov 1937 at Samaria, Oneida, Idaho.
Daniel Hughes and Sara Ann Richards were married Jan 1877 and lived in Samaria, Oneida, Idaho. Here they raised their family in a humble home. Daniel and his father James Hughes were sheep men and were away from home much of the time leaving Sara to raise the family. There were 2 girls and 4 boys. James, Jannette, Joh, Margaret, Daniel and David.
Sara’s husband died at an early age when his oldest son James was 12 years old, this left Sara Ann a young widow with a family to raise, a great challenge for a young mother.
Sara Ann was very talented in the field of nursing, going into the homes of the sick and helping in every way she could.
The Church knew about Sara’s talent so when the church sent a group of ladies to Salt Lake City to a nursing school, Sara was one of them. They studied nursing and the care of mothers and their new born babies thus they became Mid Wives.
The family moved to Malad and lived in a two story red brick home on W 600 N on the same block her brother Edmond Thomas Richards lived, here she raised her family.
Later in Sara’s life she remarried, she married John McCallaster who had a family which she helped raise, later they were divorced.
John and Daniel of her family never married and their mother kept a home for them until the time of her death.
She worked hard, always ready to go and take care of the sick when she was called. It mattered not what time of day or night she was there. She was kind, loving, dependable and always willing to help in every way she could. She would be with the Doctor and many many times alone delivering babies into this world.
She didn’t keep a record of the many babies she delivered but I’m sure it was in the hundreds. She was still delivering babies in 1934 just before her health broke. She died 21 Oct 1937 at Malad, Oneida, Idaho and was buried at Samaria.
She did many praise worthy things in her life but one that will endure is the contributions she made when she was led to help earthly mothers who are partners with our Heavenly Father in bringing his children into the world.
The mothers of this valley will always give thanks to the service she rendered unto their families, she will always be lovingly remembered as Aunt Sara.
