Farrell Daniels

Farrell Thayne Daniels, 89, was born on July 2, 1920, the third child, second son of nine children to Mary Lorraine Price Daniels and LeRoy Owens Daniels in Malad Idaho.

He spent his early childhood on the ranch in Daniels which was homesteaded by his grandfather and uncles.

His grandfather gave him his first steer which he took to the Ogden Stock Show and began his lifelong love of producing award winning purebred Herefords.

Farrell attended Malad High School where he was active in the Future Farmers of America and F.F.A. Judging Teams. He enjoyed all sports especially Football and Boxing. He was a member of the1934 Malad High School State Championship Football Team. He graduated from Malad High School, and then went to the University of Idaho to attend school there for two years. He worked his way through college as a pea and bean inspector.

He met the love of his life at a dance in the LaGrande Hall in Malad. One month later, May 23, 1941, he married Thelma Christina Clark in Pocatello, Idaho, with Cecil and Nola Harrison as their witnesses. They honeymooned in Shoshone Falls.

Farrell and Thelma lived in Daniels at the head of Malad for many years farming and ranching. They had a son Farrell Leroy Daniels who was born prematurely and lived only two hours on February 16, 1942. Lenore was born on September 6, 1943. They started to build a home in Malad when Farrell got drafted to the United States Army and served in the search and rescue team, and as a gunner, in Okinawa. While Farrell was in the army, their second son, Thayne was born on October 10, 1945. Thelma and the children lived in the basement of the unfinished home until Farrell returned. Their second daughter, Mary Sue, was born January 15, 1951. They were sealed as a family in the temple for time and all eternity in the Logan Temple on April 14, 1961.

Farrell was a lifelong rancher and stock breeder holding an annual Hereford bull sale on the ranch for several years. He was also a very active leader in church, community and state service. He served on the Oneida County Fair Board from 1952-1962. He was elected to the Malad City Council in 1964 and Oneida County Commissioner in 1970, serving as Chairman of the 5th District of county Commissioners for two years. He was appointed to the Board of the Bureau of Land Management in 1975. He served as President of the Idaho Hereford Association from 1982 – 1984. He spent 30 years serving on the Southeastern Idaho Health Board from 1966 – 1996, serving as Chairman of this Board four times. He was a member of the Malad Valley Irrigation Board and was instrumental in getting Devil Creek Dam built in Malad. After serving as first and second Vice President, he was elected to serve as President of the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association. Farrell was inducted into the Eastern Idaho Agricultural Hall of Fame March 23, 2001. He was active in the American Legion for 62 years. The Oneida County Livestock Sale was dedicated to Farrell in 2008.

Farrell is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints and held many callings to serve the members of the Malad First Ward. Farrell and Thelma served as temple ordinance workers for two years in the Logan Utah temple. He is a well respected individual whose life is built on service to others.

In January 2003, Farrell, Thelma and grandson, Tod, were helping one of their purebred cows deliver a calf when the cow turned, knocked Farrell to the ground, and stomped on his head causing severe injuries. Tod and Thelma rushed him to the emergency room in Malad and were told to take him to Pocatello where he underwent extensive surgery. The surgeon said that the accident would have killed a person much younger than Farrell, but due to his amazing physical strength, he survived and spent seven more years with his dearly loved Thelma.

Farrell passed away on March 25, 2010 at home with his beloved, devoted wife and family by his side. He left a legacy of unconditional love, hard work, honesty and integrity for his family. He is survived by his wife, Thelma; three children, Lenore (Bruce) Green , Salinas, California; Thayne (Mary Ann) Daniels, Malad; Mary Sue (Ric) Jones, Boise; 15 beloved grandchildren; and 25 great grandchildren, and are expecting three more great grandchildren by August 2010. He is also survived by three sisters, Thelma Wakley, Lela Henderson, Deon Jones and one brother, Rex Daniels, and many other friends and relatives.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday March 30, 2010 at 1:00 pm in the Malad LDS Stake Chapel, located at 1100 W. 1250 N. Friends may visit with the Daniels family on Monday evening from 6-8 pm at the Horsley Funeral Home 132 W. 300 N. in Malad and on Tuesday prior to services at the funeral home from 11:30 am-12:30 pm.
