My Story – Rachel Jones Evans

I was born in Malad City, Idaho October 19, 1890. My name before I was married was Rachel Pamela Jones. I am the daughter of Benjamin David Jones and Claudia Richards Jones. I am the fourth child in a family of twelve children. I was baptized on my eighth birthday October 19, 1898, into the church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, William Facer, (the father of Bro. Moyle Facer, who is in the Stake Presidency) baptized me. My grandfather, John Morris Jones, confirmed me.

I was married to Richard J. Evans (who is the son of Benjamin Davis Evans and Mary Jany Jones) April 5, 1911, in the Salt Lake Temple. We had four children, only one is living, Melba E. Jensen. Our little boy lived one hour, the other two died at birth.

When Melba was about seven years old we took a little boy, Dale Speed, from Texas to live with us. He is married now and lives in California. Then when my sister died we took her little girl into our home. She lived with us for ten years. She is now married and lives in Utah.

Before I was married I worked in the mutual at Cherry Creek. I was First Assistant to the president of the Mutual Improvement Association, I don’t remember for just how long. Then when I was married we went to St. John, where my husband leased his sister’s farm, I was First Assistant in the St. John Mutual there. Then when the three year lease was up we moved to our farm North of Malad. In the winters we would move to Malad where I worked as teacher in the Primary, and as block teacher for the Relief Society, I also have been class leader in the Social Service lesson in the Relief Society. I also was a teacher in Sunday School. In 1929 we moved to Smithfield, Utah where I was a teacher in Primary and block teacher in Relief Society.

In 1932 we moved back to Malad, where I again taught in Sunday School until the wards were divided. I taught in the Third Ward Sunday School, until I was called to be First Assistant to Lyle Kern in the Primary, where I worked until we moved to the Malad First Ward where I am again a teacher in the Primary and a block teacher in Relief Society.
