Marion Dale Matthews with family by his side, quietly passed away at home on June 29, 2024, following a battle with metastatic lung cancer. Dad was born in Pocatello, ID on February 4,1936. He was the 3rd child of George Washington Matthews and Mary Ann Bush. He grew up in Inkom and attended Inkom Elementary and Inkom High School. On November 9, 1956 he married Delores Lish in Inkom, and that union, was blessed with 3 daughters, Shanna (Kurt) Neeser, Teresa (Art) Benavidez, Janene Matthews. In 1985 they divorced. In August of 1996 he married Rosalie Jayne.
As a young man, Dad spent many summers in Wisdom ,Montana where he worked for John and Winnie Wharton on their ranch. Later, he served a short time in the army, stationed in Puerto Rico. He loved his time in Montana and visited many times throughout his life with his family, showing them his old stomping grounds.
Dad was a heavy equipment operator all of his working life. He worked construction and drove truck, until he finally landed at Ashgrove Cement Company. after a few years with the plant, he also bought a backhoe, dumptruck and trailer, established a successful business of his own, Matthews Excavating, and worked both jobs until his retirement from Ashgrove in 1995. He did however continue to operate Matthews Excavating for many years after his “retirement”.
Dad really enjoyed Sunday drives and short camp trips with his family. Up until three weeks before his passing, just like clockwork, dad would enjoy a bowl of ice cream every night just before bed.
