M. LaVar Christofferson Sr.
Melvin LaVar Christoffersen Sr., 65, of Malad, died Wednesday, March 18. 1992, in the LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City.
He was born December 9, 1926, in Daniels, Idaho, near Malad, a son of Melvin Oscar and Hannah Lucille Buehler Christoffersen. He was raised and educated in Daniels and was a graduate of Malad High School. He served in the Army during World War II.
He married Klea Mae Nielsen, October 31, 1945, in Preston, Idaho. The marriage was later solemnized in the Logan, Utah, LDS Temple on February 16, 1965. After his marriage, he enjoyed playing organized baseball and basketball, and later was involved in organizing and coaching a baseball program in Malad. His entire adult life was spent farming and ranching in the Daniels, Samaria, and St. John areas.
For the past 12 years, he and his wife had enjoyed extensive traveling. He was a member of the LDS Church, had served in the stake Young Men’s presidency, presidency of the Sunday school, and as a Primary teacher. He had been a member of the local Cattlemen’s Association, Water Board and Grazing Association. Recently, he had been a recipient of the Soil Conservation Service “Outstanding Cooperator Award.”
He is survived by his wife, Klea Mae, of Malad; two sons, Melvin LaVar Christoffersen Jr., Bountiful, Utah, and Gregg Nielsen Christoffersen, Salt Lake City; one daughter, Mrs. Mike (Tamara) Williams of Malad; nine grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Russ (Elaine) Rogers, Pocatello, and Mrs. Sherm (Kathy) Kirk. Logan, Utah. He is also survived by his mother, Lucille Christoffersen. of Malad. He was preceded in death by his father.
Funeral services were held Saturday at 1:00 p.m. in the Malad LDS Fourth Ward Chapel, Bishop Brent Evanson officiating. Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery, with military rites accorded by the American Legion, Emest W. Jones Post No. 65.
