Bernice Horsley Hicks

Bernice Horsley Hicks, our beloved mother, sister, grandmother and wife passed away peacefully on

January 9, 2015. She was 97 years old. The angels in heaven were truly blessed to welcome her home.

Bernice was born February 7, 1917, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Ernest and Agnes Horsley. She spent her younger years in Malad, Idaho, where she graduated from Malad High School, and was involved with The GA Club. She furthered her education at LDS Business College and both the University of Utah and BYU. She met her sweetheart, Lowell P. Hicks, while taking Marimba lessons from him. They were married in the Salt Lake Temple, on August 4, 1937. They have been married for almost 78 years.

Of all of Bernice’s passions and loves of life, her family was her most important. When she was first married, she rarely missed an opportunity to play her Marimba with Lowell at The Ambassador Club. Together they made beautiful music. She was an elect lady – a devoted and faithful mother and grandmother who made everyone feel important and loved. She always had time to read stories, play games, and show through her example, the gift of serving. Bernice was known for taking a loaf of homemade bread to a neighbor or dinner to those in need. Bernice was a stalwart member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints where she served in several Church callings, including the Relief Society, Young Womens and Primary. She loved the years with the Yalecrest Study Club.

Throughout Bernice’s life, she excelled in many things, but one of her many traits was that of a great salesman. For over 5 years, Bernice was the top sales person for Promised Land Publications. Shortly after she retired from selling, she and Lowell served an LDS Mission to Auckland, New Zealand, where they fell in love with the culture, people and service.

Bernice is survived by her devoted husband, Lowell; her children, Kay (Melvin) Ward, Jean (Jay deceased) Wright, Roger (Linda) Hicks, Teresa (Steve) Ross, Ron (Sherri) Hicks, brother Raymond E. Horsley, 30 grand kids, and over 65 great grand kids and many other family and friends.

A special thank you goes to Ruby – “Grandma’s Earthly Angel,” for the years of loving care, sweet songs and gentle hugs. We’d also like to thank Vanessa and Joan, RN, who were both so devoted to Grandma’s comfort and well being, as well as the whole staff at Hospice For Utah and Harmony Hospice.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 14, 2015 – 11:00 A.M. at the Yalecrest Ward Chapel, 1035 South 1800 East, Salt Lake City, Utah. Friends and family may pay their respects at a viewing on Tuesday, January 13, 2015 from 6:00 – 8:00 P.M. at Larkin Sunset Lawn, 2350 E 1300 South, Salt Lake City, Utah and again from 9:30 – 10:30 A.M. prior to the funeral.
