Alta Evelyn John Hess

Malad…….Alta Evelyn John Hess, 95, passed away on December 15, 2009 in Malad. She was born in Portage, Utah on May 11, 1914, the 3rd of 4 children born to Alvin William and Blanche Evelyn Landon John. After her parents divorced, she moved to Malad when her mother married Thomas Babbit. Alta was raised and educated in Malad from the age of eight. Growing up, Alta assisted her mother at housekeeping and hanging wall paper. Alta enjoyed her family, gardening, canning, quilting, her grandchildren and the John family reunions. Alta married Robert R. Rushton and they later divorced. From this union there was born one son and two daughters; Robert R., LaVona Rae and Ruth Elaine. Alta married Herbert A. Hess in Boise in 1942. From this union there were four sons and two daughters; Herb, Sallie, Ronald, Donald, Boyd and Julene.
They moved to Seattle, Washington, where they resided until 1947. The family moved to Holbrook to help on the family farm and later moved to St. John to operate their own farm and raise their family.. After Herbert and Alta sold their farm to their son, Alta worked for Brigham Apparel in Utah for a few years. Alta is survived by her daughters; Sallie Lothrop (Kenneth Kidd) of Downey; Julene (Thomas) Bingham of Honeyville, Utah. Her four sons: Robert R. (Darlene) Rushton of Willard, Utah: Herb (Sherry) Hess; Donald Hess (Beth Seamons); Boyd (Sharon) Hess, all of Malad. 39 grandchildren, 75 great grandchildren and 74 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband; Herbert Arthur Hess; two daughters; LaVona Wakley and Ruth Conley, one son; Ronald J. Hess, her parents, a brother, two sisters, two half brothers, two half sisters, one grandson, three granddaughters and one great great granddaughter. Funeral services will be held on Monday December 21, 2009 at 1:00 pm in the Malad LDS 6th Ward Chapel 200 W. 400 N. Friends may visit with the Hess family on Sunday evening from 6-8 pm at the church and on Monday at the church prior to service from 11:30 am- 12:30 pm. Burial will follow in the Malad City Cemetery.
