Edmond DuWayne Harris

McCammon….After a sudden and short battle with cancer, Edmond DuWayne Harris passed away [October 5, 2011], surrounded by his family, at the home of his daughter, Tracy Hagadorn, in Eagle, Idaho. He was born January 26, 1934 to Oliver William and Pearl Eliza Davis Harris at their log home on the family farm in the Reddyville area northwest of McCammon, Idaho. He was the youngest of eleven children having two brothers, Calvin Claude (who died in infancy), Oliver Khalil, and eight sisters, Twila (Smith,Rufenaucht), Thressa (Binggeli), Fern (McCardell), Mary Blaudwin (Hansen, Parkinson), Theo (Morgan), Marjorie (Miles), Ethel Jean (Smart), and Colleen (Corbridge, Tewalt).

DuWayne attended school in McCammon, where he was active in sports and school plays. During his junior year of high school, DuWayne accidentally shot himself in the lower right abdomen with a 12-gauge shotgun while duck hunting. The quick actions of his friends, Bob Larsen and Maurice Kinney, who were hunting with him at the time, saved his life. It was also during his junior year that he met Carolyn Jones, who would become his wife.

DuWayne and Carolyn were married on February 4, 1955 and lived in Pocatello during the first few years of their marriage. In 1961 they moved back to McCammon with their two oldest children, where they resided until their divorce in 2006. DuWayne continued to live in McCammon until 2010.

DuWayne worked as a switchman for the railroad when he was a young man, and then later he worked in road construction for Bannock Paving Co., where he was employed until his retirement in 1990. He was also an avid farmer and gardener. For many years he leased two tracts of land bordering the Portneuf river in McCammon. He raised horses, pigs, chickens and cattle, grew hay, and loved to plant lavish gardens in the rich river bottom soil. He could never grow a good garden at the house because the soil was too rocky, but the gardens by the river flourished and he was very proud of them. DuWayne also loved fishing, hunting and camping with his children, his friends, and his most faithful companion, his dog Buddy, who became his best friend and his second son.

Dad loved the mountains around McCammon and in his later years took daily drives “around the loop” through garden creek gap and along Marsh Creek road, winding down around through Reddyville and past his boyhood home, which still sits on Aslett Acres. He loved animals, and could sit and watch the birds fly around the bird feeder for hours. He had such a humorous personality, he loved to play practical jokes and entertain us all with his stories.

DuWayne was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Calvin and Khalil, his sisters Twila, Thressa, Fern, Blaudwin, Theo and Colleen. He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Tracy and John Hagadorn, his son, Jayson Harris, his daughter, Dana Harris, six grandsons, four granddaughters, and his sister Jean Smart, as well as numerous nieces and nephews with whom he always had close relationships.
