POCATELLO, Ida. – Virgil W. Allen, 85,112 Ravine, a prominent Pocatello educator, died Friday, April 9, 1999 at his home following an extended illness.

He was born September 9, 1913 at Rockland, Idaho to J. Ira and Nancy Orme Allen. He attended elementary school in Rockland, high school in Pocatello, graduated from East High School in Salt Lake city, received a bachelor of arts degree from University of Idaho at Moscow.

Virgil joined the CCCs after graduating and moved to Shoup Camp near Salmon, Idaho, where he met Grace Posser, and they married in 1935. He was in the Army Infantry and served in Manila during World Wart II.

He was a teacher and an administrator in the Idaho public schools for 35 years, retiring from the Pocatello school district in 1975.

He was honored by being chosen for the Professional Achievement Award by the ISU College of Education in 1988. He was also placed on the Retired Teachers Honor Roll.

He was active in the Bannock County Historical Society, and helped build a museum at Ross Park. He wrote the history for the Pocatello school district and family histories.

He was given an award of appreciation by the county commissioners and the City of Pocatello for his work on Idaho’s centennial celebration.

He is survived by his wife, Grace, of Pocatello; two sons, V. Ralph Allen of Lake Oswego, Oregon, Gary H. Allen of Arbon Valley ; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three sisters, Ilene Rowe of Blackfoot; Eva Martin of Hayward, Calif., Avon Compton of St. George, Utah; and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and sisters, and by two step-brothers.

Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, April 13, 1999 at 11 a.m. in the Henderson-Cornelison Funeral Chapel, 431 N. 15th Ave., with Pastor Ken Young Officiating.

The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mountainview Cemetery.
