Funeral Rites for Stone Soldier Killed in Action

Funeral services were held Monday at Curlew LDS Ward Chapel, Snowville, for Platoon Sergeant Victor Edward Anderson who was killed in action in Viet Nam Jan. 31, 1961.

Sgt. Anderson was the first Viet Nam War causality from Oneida County and the third from Idaho.

The service was conducted by Bishop Blaine Hickman. Family prayer was offered by Kenneth Anderson; the invocation, Henry Richards, and the benediction Earl Hickman. Speakers were Harvey Harris, President Jerry Rose, Bishop Hickman and Linda Jackson, who gave the obituary. Special musical numbers included a duet, Jay and Doyle Cutler; duet, Larry and Thayne Stokes; solo, Jenkin Palmer; solo, Jarvis Greene. Rennis Larkin was accompanist and played the prelude and postlude music.

Edwin Harris offered the dedicatory prayer at the Snowville, Utah, cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Ernest W. Jones post, American Legion. Flowers were carried by cousins and friends under supervision of the Curlew Ward Relief Society Casket bearers were Kenneth Anderson, Burl Willoughby, John Robins, Delewyn Jensen, David Robbins, Gale Neal, Levi Hughes and Ralph Hughes. Honorary bearers were Ray Anderson, Gene Jensen, Royce Jensen, Everett Higby, Howard Jackson, Farrell Williams, Roger Hoyt, Robbie Higby, Tommy Goddard and James Carter. Interment was directed by Benson Funeral Service.

Sgt. Anderson, age 22, was born at Independence, Inyo, Calif., April 11, 1943 to Lars Victor and Elva Richards Anderson, while his father was serving with the US Army. He received his education in Stone and Malad schools. He was a member of the LDS church. He married Janet Greene Nov. 11, 1960, at Weston, Idaho. She has been making her home in Columbus, Georgia with their two children, Clint Victor age three, and Elva Lynn, one.

Prior to his assignment to Viet Nam, Sgt. Anderson served 2 ½ years in Germany. In Viet Nam, he was taking part in the operation Masher, according to a letter written Jan 24th to his parents.

Surviving are his widow and children; parents; four brothers, Kenneth Lars, Wynn Richards, Timothy Wayne, Keith Jay, all of Stone; grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Lars Anderson, Stone.
