Vernon LaGrande Barker

Vernon L Barker 76, passed away on Saturday June 25, 2016 at his home with his family following a severe illness after a stroke. He was born September 7, 1939 to Thomas Barker and Evelyn Pope in Garden City, Utah. Having been married twice and divorced twice. He was proceeded in death by both of his parents as well as 2 sisters, Bonnie and Marla. He leaves behind children Jenifer (Robert) Burleigh Mitch Cheney (Lisa), Bob Dahle (Jill), Scott Barker and countless grandchildren and great grandchildren. He also leaves his brothers, Duc, Keith, Steve, Tommy and Jody, sisters Tami and Judy. Vern led a very active life. He started breaking and training colts on his grandfather’s ranch as a very young man where he began chariot racing, in addition to playing drums for his high school band. He then went on to serve in the United States Air Force, which later led to him flying passenger jets. He test piloted top fuel dragsters for Ford Racing and became a four time master mechanic for Ford Motor Co., as well as an avid horse trainer working with high quality show and racing breeds. He loved racing horses both Chariot and flat track, but his greatest enjoyment wasspending time with his family, whether it was at the track, in the barn, upon a hunting trip or just sitting in the back yard. At his request, there will be no formal services held so the family invites you to attend a wake in his honor where we will celebrate his life on July 16, 2016, from 3 until 8 pm in Ogden at the Weber County Sheriff’s Mounted Posse building, located at 810 N Hwy 89 in Ogden, Utah.
