Verlaine Smith Nicholas, 78 of Malad, passed away peacefully November 24, 2017.

Verlaine was born May 21, 1939 in Malad, Idaho to Alvin and Vera Gleed Smith. She was the second of six children and spent most of her childhood living on the family farm in a three-room log house in the Deep Creek area. She attended school in Malad and graduated from Malad High School in 1957. After graduating, Verlaine moved to Salt Lake City, Utah where she worked at various jobs. She married Michael Steven Nicholas on April 1, 1962. They later divorced.

Verlaine made a career working in the trucking industry as a bookkeeper and eventually settled with Yellow Freightline until her retirement.

Verlaine’s greatest joy was her family and spending time with her friends. She was a wonderful cook, and she loved traveling.

She was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day-Saints. She was loved and respected by members of her ward and she especially loved the times the young men and women would stop by and visit with her.

Verlaine is survived by sisters, Emogene (Bardell) Napier, of Malad, Karen Wharton, of Malad, Donna Berry, of Brigham City, Utah, brothers, Wendell (Pam) Smith, of Malad, and Kenneth (Nancy) Smith, of Pinedale, Wyoming, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Verlaine was preceded in death by her parents, Alvin and Vera Gleed Smith, nieces, Danise Thomas Grote, Lyndell Napier Ward, and great nephew Brady Lee Grote. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, November 29, 2017 at 12:00 noon at Horsley Funeral Home 132 W. 300 N. Malad, Idaho, with a viewing prior to the services from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Burial will follow in the Malad City Cemetery.
