Robert Woodland Henderson

ARIMO- Robert Woodland Henderson, 92, of Arimo and husband of Winafred Smith Henderson, passed away at his home Tuesday, June 11, 1996, of apparent heart failure.

Bob was born at Robin, Idaho, September 1, 1903, a son of Benjamin Williams and Diey Elizabeth Woodland Henderson. He moved with his family into the first frame home built in Marsh Valley on a farm south of Arimo in 1912, where he had since lived.

Bob started school in Robin, and was a member of the first class when a high school was established in Arimo. After completing the three years offered there, he graduated Brigham Young College at Logan, Utah.

He married Winafred Smith in the Logan LDS Temple on January 23, 1924.

Bob worked as a switchman for the Union Pacific Railroad before returning to the farm to help his father in a time of need, also working for the Federal Land Bank to make ends meet. Under his care the farm grew to a sizable ranch.

Following World War II, his eldest son, Robert S., joined him in ranching. After retiring, Bob continued to supervise the leases and look after the canal water.

Bob was a high priest in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and was actively serving as a home teacher at the time of his death. He served as the second bishop of the Arimo LDS Ward from 1935 to 1946.

He also had served on the Bannock County and Marsh Valley school boards. HE held offices in the Arimo Ditch, Portneuf Irrigating and McCammon Ditch companies for many year. He held local and state offices in the Idaho Cattlemen’s Association as the only surviving charter member. Bob served on the four-county committee that established senior services in the area, and faithfully attended senior citizen lunch at Lava Hot Springs and Downey, taking a carload of Arimo widows there with him, and his wife.

Bob suffered numerous and serious health problems, but he adjusted his life to take them in stride, and was well-known for his good nature and acceptance of whatever life sent him.

He is survived by his wife, Winafred, of Arimo; one son, Stanely S. and wife, Ruth Henderson, of Salt Lake City, Utah; on daughter, Alice H. Dunn and husband, Wendell, of Pocatello; one daughter-in-law, Helen H. Henderson, nine grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. He was preceded in death by a son, Robert Smith Henderson, in 1993, and one daughter, Olive Ladene Henderson, in 1930. He was also preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, 1996 at noon in the Arimo LDS Ward Chapel. Friends may call at Horsley’s Marsh Valley Funeral Home in Arimo on Friday, June 14, from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m., and on Saturday at the church from 10:30 a.m. to 11:45 a.m.
