Norman Jay Smith was born in Pocatello, Idaho, on September 16, 1965, to Earl Gordon and Brenda Fae (Baker) Smith, and died at his home in Middleton, Idaho, Saturday, December 12, 2015, after a year’s struggle with pancreatic cancer.
Norm grew up in Grace, Idaho and as a young boy delivered Grit Newspaper and moved pipe for a local farmer.
Norm is a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He served a two-year mission in the South Carolina Columbia mission.
He attended Idaho State University and graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Finance. It was here at ISU, serving as a home teacher for his church, that Norm met and faithfully visited his future companion – never waiting for the last day of the month. He and Dania were married and sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls temple in 1991. He has been a faithful home teacher ever since.
Through his years of better health, Norm had been employed with the KeyBank, Albertson’s, and PERSI.
Norm was an Eagle Scout and had a love for scouting. He spent many years helping the young men of Troop 747 attain their Eagle rank. Norm was a huge sports fan and never missed a chance to cheer on his favorite teams. Bowl Games and March Madness were always big events in his home.
Norman is survived by his wife, Dania Ruth (Marteeny) Smith of Middleton; his sister, Cindy Mae Smith; his in-laws, Dan & Diana Marteeny of Malad, Douglas & Liz of Albany, OR, and Dennis & Chris of Portland, OR; nieces, Hannah, Bethany, Madison, and Elisa; and nephew, Isaac. He was preceded in death by his father and mother.
Funeral services will be held at The LDS Church on Lansing Lane in Middleton, Saturday, December 19th at 11:00 a.m. with burial to follow at the Middleton Cemetery under the direction of Dakan Funeral Chapel, Caldwell. (Norm apologizes for any conflict this may have with the BYU-Utah bowl game.) Friends may call Friday evening, December 18th from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Dakan Chapel and from 10:00 to 10:45 a.m. Saturday morning in the Relief Society room prior to services.
