Mona Williams Bird

Malad……..Mona Williams Bird, 90, of Malad, wife of Melvin V. Bird, passed away on March 28, 2010 at her home, of apparent heart failure. She was born June 21, 1919 in Malad, a daughter of Benjamin and Nora Bell Williams. She grew up in Cherry Creek and always called the Cherry Creek and Woodruff areas, her home. Mona graduated from Malad High School and later graduated from Cosmotologist School in Idaho Falls. She married Melvin V. Bird December 21, 1940 in Pocatello. Melvin’s employment took them to Burbank, California, where they resided until Melvin was called to serve in the Armed Forces during WWII. During that time, Mona and children returned to Malad, and when Melvin was discharged, they owned and operated the Western Furniture and Appliance Store. In 1948 they sold the store and went to Idaho State University to further their education.. while there Mona studied Physical Education and was president of the Campus Wive’s Club. In 1952 they moved to Idaho Falls, where they resided fro 35 years. During that time Mona raised her children and owned and operated her own beauty salon. In 1987 they returned to Malad, where they have since resided. Mona was a loving wife and caregiver to her husband, Melvin. She loved to travel, enjoyed her many collectibles, bowling, singing and especially spending time with her sister and best friend, LaVene John. mona is survived by her husband of Malad; Melvin; 2 sons; Tyss Bird of Malad and Dean (Dixie) Bird of Idaho Falls; 8 grandchildren and several great grandchildren; 1 sister; LaVene John of Malad; 2 brothers; Grant (Wilma) Williams of Preston, Idaho ; 3 sisters in law; Aileen Williams, Lou Williams and Grace Williams all of Malad. She was preceded in death by her parents and brothers; Wayne, Clem and Dee Williams. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 at 12:00 noon in the Horsley Funeral Home, 132 W 300 N. Malad, Idaho. Friends may visit with the family from 10:30-11:30 a.m. prior to the service in the funeral home.
