Marvin Jay Butler
Marvin Jay Butler, 73 died April 14, 1998 at his home in West Jordan, Utah from natural causes. At the time of death he was attended by his wife, Irene and his family.
Jay was born December 11, 1924 in Arimo, Idaho to Marvin Adelbert Butler and Ines Cyrene Jackson. He was the youngest of five children. He lived on the family homestead farm in Dairy Creek, near Malad.
In 1937 the Butler family moved to Provo, Utah. Jay graduated from Provo High School in 1943. Upon graduation he joined the United States Army Air Corps and trained as a pilot in World War II. He served with the United States occupation army in Okinawa.
Following the war, Jay attended Brigham Young University, graduated in 1951 with a B.S. in banking and accounting.
In 1952, Jay began a 32year career as a commercial airline pilot with Western Air Lines. He served as Chief Pilot in Salt Lake City with responsibility for over 600 employees the last two years of his career.
After retirement in 1984, Jay served for nearly seven years as a supervisor and worked in the Jordan River Temple. Jay was a High Priest and served in many positions in the LDS Church. At the time of his death he was serving as Stake Family Record Extraction Director.
In 1944, Jay married Myra Knight. They were the parents of Jeffrey Jay Butler (Shannon), Bountiful, Utah; Julie Ann Crandall (David), Pittsburg, California; Jonathan Knight Butler (Shauna), Bountiful, Utah; and Brett Jackson Butler (Kathryn), Lawrenceville, Georgia. Jay and Myra divorced in 1967. He married Joann Strong in 1969 and later divorced. Jay married Irene Moser in 1995.
Jay is survived by his wife, his four children, a sister, Hortense Singleton (Paul), Orem, Utah, and a brother, Ross Butler (Barbara), Burlingame, California. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren, seven nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers, Claude and Keith Butler.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 18, 1998, in West Jordan, Utah. Interment was at the Provo City Cemetery.
