Marion Joseph Hess

MALAD — Marion Joseph Hess, 72, Malad, died Wednesday in the Oneida County Hospital of heart failure.
He was born March 10, 1914 in Malad, to Joseph W. and Ester Lusk Jones Hess. He was raised and educated in Malad and graduated from Malad High School. He later graduated from the Diesel Power Engineering School in San Francisco.
He married Lois Lorraine Price Jan. 28, 1939 in Salt Lake City. Their marriage was solemnized in the Logan, Utah LDS Temple April 16, 1965.
Mr. Hess worked as a mechanic in Idaho, Utah and California. For many years, he owned and operated the Hess Construction Company, which did general contracting and was based in Malad. Several years ago, he was instrumental in the discovery and subsequent development of the Hess Pumice Company and also the Perlite Mine of which he was president and co-owner of both.
He was a member of the LDS Church and held the office of high priest. He was an active community leader, served on the city council and was past president of the Malad area Chamber of Commerce. He was also a member of the Lions Club, Elks Club and past member of the Associated General Contractors of America.
He is survived by his wife of Malad; two sons, Joseph Marvin and Don Lee Hess, both of Malad; three daughters, Rose Mary Hess. Logan, Utah; Mrs. Ed (Kathleen) Hyde, Smithfield, Utah; Mrs. Nicholas (LaReta) Gugelman, Malad; 15 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; four brothers, Richard J., Melvin J., Orval J. and Earl J. Hess, all of Malad! He was preceded in death by three brothers and one sister.
Funeral services will be Saturday at noon in the Malad LDS First Ward chapel with Bishop Sheldon Jensen Officiating.
Casket Bearers were Michael T. Atkinson, (Grandson-in-law), Allen Edwards (Grandson-in-law), Nicholas Gugelman (Son-in-law), Clinton Gugelman (Grandson), Michael J. Hess (Grandson) , Shawn Hess (Grandson), and Edward Hyde (Son-in-law).
Honorary Bearers were Ezra Hoskins, Claude Williams, Piatt Price, Jack Madsen, Jack Mulder, Keith Dudley, Chet Burnett, Wayne Williams, Garry Hess, John Hummell Don Williams, LaVere Nieffenegger. Mac Smith, Ray Udy, Chris Toland Gary Allen, Don Gibbs, and Elton Ashton.
