Karen Smith Thomas Wharton

Karen Smith Thomas Wharton left her earthly home Friday, June 29, 2018.

She was born June 11, 1942 to Alvin and Vera Gleed Smith in Malad, Idaho. She spent the first part of her life on the family farm in Deep Creek and later on moved into town to attend Malad schools.

Karen was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

She worked at the courthouse as a Deputy Clerk from 1979 to 2011.

She married Robert Wayne Thomas on November 26, 1959. She and Bob had five children, Dan, Shawn, Lisa, Danise, and Kathryn. Bob passed away on February 24, 1970. She married Kenneth Wharton on July 17, 1981. Ken passed away on March 7, 2008.

Karen will be remembered by everyone who knew her as the kindest, most compassionate soul.

She is survived by her four children: Dan R. (Leslee) Thomas of Pocatello, Idaho; Shawn Thomas of Ogden, Utah; Lisa (Tracy) Poulsen of Sandy, Utah; and Kathryn Alane (Rob) Hess of Malad; sisters, Emogene (Bardell) Napier of Malad; and Donna Berry Brigham City, Utah; brothers, Wendell (Pam) Smith of Malad; and Kenneth (Nancy) Smith of Pinedale, Wyoming & Wickenburg, Arizona; 14 grandchildren; Chelcia, Cecilia, CaeDee, Courtney, Devry, Brienna, JD, Kodiak, Garrett, Travis, DeziRay, Caleb, Rachel and Payton; 13 great grandchildren, and two on the way. She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob Thomas; her husband, Ken Wharton; daughter, Danise Thomas Grote; grandson, Brady Lee Grote; and sister, Verlaine Smith Nicholas.

Funeral services for Karen will be on Saturday, July 7, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Malad Third Ward LDS Chapel A viewing will be held Friday evening from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Saturday from 11:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. at the Horsley Funeral Home prior to the service. Graveside services will be at the Malad City Cemetery. Following the service at the cemetery, there will be a life celebration for family and friends at Karens’s home.
