John Jacob (Jay) Abbott

MALAD – John Jacob (Jay) Abbott, 46, 437 N. Main, Malad, died Wednesday (22 June 1983) in the McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah, as the result of a self-inflicted gun-shot wound.

He was born Dec. 21, 1936, in Malad to John O. and Katie Archibald Abbott. He grew up and was educated in Malad and was a graduate of Malad High School.

He married Nona Rae Kelley Feb. 10, 1956, in Arimo. She died Oct. 18, 1963. He married Kathleen Bingham in Malad. They were later divorced.

He had worked in Malad, Pocatello, and nearby states as an auto mechanic.

He was a member of the LDS Church and is survived by one son, Nolan J. Abbott Kelley, Roy, Utah; four daughters, Mrs. Merrill (Jaylene) Greenwell, North Ogden, Utah; Ms.Christine Bird, Ogden, Utah; and Shellie and Sherrie Durfee, Chubbuck; six grandchildren; his parents, Malad; four sisters, Mrs. Clair (Nancy) Lott, North Ogden, Utah; Mrs. Ferron (Patsy) Johnson, Ogden; Mrs. Sheldon (Deloris) Beeton, Soda Springs; and Mrs. Alan (Loretta) Hall, Shelley. He was preceded in death by a sister.

Funeral services were held Saturday at 11 a.m. in the Malad LDS First Ward Chapel with Bishop Garth Sweeten officiating.

Burial was in the Malad City Cemetery.
